104TH GREY CUP: OTTAWA 39 CALGARY 33
TORONTO – Henry Burris’s 18-yard TD strike to Ernest Jackson earned the Ottawa Redblack an epic 39-33 overtime Grey Cup win over the Calgary Stampeders on Sunday night.
Burris, the game MVP, found Jackson – who bobbled the pass – on the first overtime possession. But the veteran quarterback couldn’t hit a wide-open Khalil Paden for the two-point convert.
Calgary needed to match Ottawa’s six points but went three-and-out on its possession. Bo Levi Mitchell’s third-down pass went off Bakari Grant’s hands to give Ottawa one of the biggest upset victories in Grey Cup history.
Burris was stellar, throwing three TD passes and running for two more.
“There was almost a situation where I wasn’t able to play today. My knee locked up on me before the game, I mean I wouldn’t have been able to accept that,” Burris said when interviewed by TSN after receiving his MVP award.
“But you know what? For all those haters out there, their organizations haven’t won a Grey Cup in decades, but ours, in three years, here we are, Grey Cup champions.”
It was the third game in Grey Cup history to go to overtime and first since 2005 when Edmonton beat Montreal 38-35 at B.C. Place Stadium.
Rene Paredes’ 10-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining forced overtime as Calgary impressively rallied from a 27-7 third-quarter deficit.
DaVaris Daniels scored on a 19-yard TD run on third-and-two at 13:22 of the fourth to cut Ottawa’s lead to 33-30 before Glenn Love recovered Rob Maver’s onside kick at Calgary’s 49-yard line with 1:36 remaining.
Burris opened the third hitting Brad Sinopoli, the game’s top Canadian, on a nine-yard TD strike at 3:21 to cap an impressive 69-yard, six-play drive. But after a Paredes 32-yard field goal at 7:40, Mitchell hit Lemar Durant on a 34-yard TD strike at 11:01, cutting Ottawa’s lead to 27-17.
Then Andrew Buckley’s one-yard TD run at 1:25 of the fourth pulled Calgary to within 27-23 as Paredes missed the convert.
The game could be the last of Burris’s illustrious 17-year CFL career. The 41-year-old said this week he’ll take the off-season to ponder his future.
If Burris retires, he’ll certainly leave on a huge high, completing 35-of-46 passes for 461 yards en route to his third Grey Cup title. And he did a nice job of distributing the ball, using eight different receivers in the game.
Before a capacity crowd of 33,421, Ottawa was a staggering underdog after finishing atop the East Division with an 8-9-1 mark _ the first team in CFL history take first in a conference with a losing record. Calgary was a league-best 15-2-1 and was coming off a 42-15 West Division final win over B.C.
And on Thursday, five Stampeders were honoured at the CFL awards banquet, including Mitchell, who received the league’s outstanding player honour. Calgary was looking to finish its banner season with a Grey Cup victory to garner support as the best team in history to capture a championship.
Calgary was also playing to win for Mylan Hicks, a practice-roster player who was shot to death in September. His mother, Renee Hill, attended the game wearing her son’s No. 31 jersey and huddled with the defensive backs prior to the contest.
But Burris, last year’s outstanding player, stole the show in leading an Ottawa team to a Grey Cup win for the first time since 1976 and avenging the franchise’s loss to Edmonton in the 2015 CFL title game.
Burris provided plenty of pre-game drama, leaving the field during warmups with an apparent knee injury. Burris wasn’t with the Redblacks when they took to the field but rejoined his teammates after undergoing treatment that reportedly included having the joint frozen and capped an impressive 65-yard, 10-play drive opening with a one-yard TD run at 6:46 to open the scoring.
Calgary effectively countered with a four-play, 79-yard march Mitchell capped with a seven-yard TD strike to Jerome Messam at 9:14. After Ray Early’s 37-yard field goal put Ottawa ahead 10-7 at 13:03, the Stampeders lost leading receiver Marquay McDaniel to a shoulder injury late in the quarter.
Patrick Lavoie had Ottawa’s other touchdown. Early added three converts and two field goals.
Paredes booted a convert and two field goals.

That was the most enjoyable Grey Cup game I've seen in years.
Does anyone remember what Calgary's regular season record was?
Did THREE interceptions ever look good on the Braggin' Texan.
Good for Bob Dyce.

Well, I'm usually not one to shed any tears for Calgary…. But I have to say, it's a travesty that the Grey Cup goes to a team from the East. Ottawa would have finished in fifth place in the West division. BC was the second best team in the league and Calgary demolished them in the Western final. In sum, in football, the regular season is a joke. (Ask the best football team of all time, 2007 New England Patriots.) I guess the one silver lining is that it's good for the Ottawa franchise (and the league) to have a… Read more »
I guess leagues should just hand over the championship to the regular season Champs. That's why you have to line up and play the games come playoff time, last week means____.
Henry Burris has earned the right to say whatever he wants and that comment was directed right at Kent Austin and the Ti-Cats. Ottawa as a historical football club has more championships than Saskatchewan so funny.
I agree, they were so full of themselves and than going public with wanting to win for their fallen comrade, bringing his mother in and the whole bit. That was a bit over the top. Play for the guy if you want but don't turn it into a media thing with how wonderful you are by doing so.
Was cheering for Ottawa all the way. Evans. Dice. Even Henry. Congrats !
Very happy indeed for the Stinks to choke. The only thing BM will be remembered for is the 3 interceptions he tossed.

So, I wonder if Mr Roy Shivers would still take Nealon over Smiling Hank??
Hahahahahaha. Shivers the idiot.
Burris still out there and playing at that level. I have nothing but admiration for the guy! He deserved the MVP! And I can say this as a Rider fan! Dean
The best team on the field won. Win all you want in the regular season but the playoffs are a whole new ball game. Perhaps Calgary got caught up in their own press clippings and believed all they needed to do was show up and someone would hand them the cup. Guess they found out that that is not how it works. It was a crazy game. Haven't been that nervous about a non-Rider game in a long time. Congratulations to all the former Riders who are now RedBlacks.
Baaaa haaaaaa haaaaaa.
Baby Bo Bo is probably somehow going to blame this on the Riders lol.
All that cockiness. All that unbelievable season, all for not. I fricken love it.
Congrats Henri and the Redblacks.
1. Ottawa in the grey cup the past 2 years proves 1 thing: The expansion draft was too generous to Ottawa
2. I'm sitting in an American pub watching the game and the Yankees are wondering what a turd down is. (Ref trying to say third down)
So happy for Ottawa but talk about a goof in play calling by the Stamps. With second and goal from the 2 yard line and a 260 lb Messam frothing at the mouth, the Stamps decide to try what worked earlier in the game with Buckley!!! Don't feel sorry at all for them. Thanks for all the great coverage of the Riders and the CFL all year.. Polkabill from the Peg
Kudos to Henry and the Redblacks. The loss looks especially good on Mitchell and Dickerson and the Stamps. Hip hip hooray.
Blow Levi Mitchell choked!!!
I was very happy to see Ottawa win. Congrats to them on a hard fought win. They were the better team today. Not sorry to see Calgary lose. Maybe a bit of Katma came back to bite Mitchell after complaining about teams during the regular season. We will leave it at that!!
I like the division set up just the way it is. The league does not need to be aligned in one division, and today's result highlights why it should not change. Capturing one of two divisions has an importance to it that would be lost if it was all one division. There are times that the west division won't be as strong as the east, and we will be glad of the two division concept. This year's Stampeder team reminds me of the Tracy Ham led Eskimo team in 1989, the self-proclaimed greatest team ever assembled in CFL history. The… Read more »
I'm going to defend Ottawa and say that the Regular season record doesn't always reflect how good a team is going into the playoffs! No, The Redblacks didn't finish the season with a winning record, but Ottawa finished off the season strong and beat both Edmonton and Calgary in the playoffs! (Two teams with better regular season records) that to me proves that Ottawa does deserve the Grey Cup! They were the better team for most of the game and Henry Burris played like an MVP, especially in OT! …saying it's a travesty to have Ottawa win? Pfft. No! It's… Read more »
"Ottawa in the grey cup the past 2 years proves 1 thing: The expansion draft was too generous to Ottawa"
Look at their roster and see how many players are actually from that draft. Ottawa is solid because of good use of free agency (receiving corps in particular), scouting the States (see the defensive backfield) and the draft.
They also helped themselves with players discarded by other teams, like Mitchell White, Taylor Reed and, well, Burris.
Looks like the oskee wee wee shouldn't have let burris walk 😉
Good and bad Grey Cup for me.
Good that the Stamps lost.
Bad that Burris was the winning quarterback (always chirping about the lack of respect etc etc) He's a good QB just shut up and play.
BLM had a big helping of humble pie after choking on a big ole horse turd.
One for Jonesy and the Riders, we beat the Grey Cup champs twice this year!!! Next year country!
