WEDNESDAY COMMENTARY – TAKE A TRIP

WAS IT JUST ME OR DID TUESDAY SEEM LIKE A REALLY WILD NIGHT IN SPORTS?

WITH THE MOST DISGUSTING WEATHER OUTSIDE IN MONTHS, THE REMOTE CONTROL WAS SMOKING GOING BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN NHL AND CFL GAMES.

I HALF-HEARTEDLY TRIED TO FIND THE CANADA-MEXICO SOCCER GAME THAT EVERYBODY’S BUZZING ABOUT BUT, WHAT? IT’S NOT ON A TSN CHANNEL?

NEXT!

(I UNDERSTAND CANADA WON 2-1 AND ARE NOW IN FIRST-PLACE IN THEIR POOL. CONGRATS!)

TRUST ME; I HAD MY HANDS FULL WITH THE FLORIDA PANTHERS/N.Y. ISLANDERS GAME WHICH DREW A PRETTY BIG CROWD AT FLA LIVE ARENA. SADLY, IT WASN’T MUCH OF A GAME AS THE PANTHERS JUMPED OUT TO A 4-0 LEAD ON THE WAY TO A 6-1 ROUT.

DID YOU KNOW FLORIDA LEADS THE NHL IN FIRST PERIOD GOALS?

THEN IT WAS OVER TO TORONTO’S BMO FIELD WHERE – DESPITE A WOEFULLY LOW CROWD – THE EDMONTON ELKS WERE TRYING THEIR GUTS OUT IN A MEANINGLESS GAME.

AS IT TURNS OUT, EDMONTON UPSET THE ARGONAUTS 13-7 FOR JUST THEIR THIRD WIN, AND TORONTO’S FIRST HOME LOSS OF THE SEASON.

(THESE ARGOS ARE DRAWING STATISTICAL COMPARISONS TO THE 1997 TORONTO GREY CUP CHAMPS BUT IT SAYS HERE ALL RECORDS IN THIS COVID-SHORTENED SEASON SHOULD BE THROWN OUT).

THEN THE MAIN EVENT: THE EDMONTON OILERS AT THE WINNIPEG JETS. THAT WAS A JUICY ONE HERE IN THE NHL’S BERMUDA TRIANGLE BUT WINNIPEG JUMPED OUT TO A 4-0 LEAD ON THE WAY TO A 5-2 VICTORY. I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE CLOSER.

THE OILERS WERE HUMBLED, BUT HAVE THE CHANCE TO ATONE FOR IT THURSDAY NIGHT WHEN THEY HOST THOSE SAME JETS.

IT WAS A COLD, BLUSTERY, SASKATCHEWAN NIGHT BUT THANKS TO CABLE TV, I DROPPED INTO SUNRISE, FLORIDA, TORONTO, AND THEN WINNIPEG.

TALK ABOUT TAKING A TRIP AND NEVER LEAVING THE FARM.
