Famed NHL super pest Matthew Barnaby has added the title of author to his name, with the release of his new autobiography entitled ‘Unfiltered.’

Barnaby appeared on Tuesday’s Rod Pedersen Show discussing his book-writing experience.

“It was a fun process,” said Barnaby. “Really glad I did it. I’m never writing another one, cause it takes a long time, but it was really fun.”

The book takes the reader through Barnaby’s experiences in the NHL (1992-2007, 300 pts, 2562 PMs), and how he was able to create a 15-year career for himself.

A story talking about Barnaby can be found in the book’s back cover, where it states the following.

“In the run-up to the NHL Entry Draft in 1992, the Buffalo Sabres interviewed Matthew Barnaby. John Muckler, Buffalos coach asked him, ‘What happens at 8:05 on Saturday night in Detroit when Bob Probert asks you to fight?’ When the teenager responded, ‘that’s easy. At 8:03 I’d have already asked Probert to fight,’ They knew they had to draft him.”

From Barnaby’s perspective, a career in hockey was his way out of the life he experienced as a child.

“I went through my childhood not having a dad,” explained Barnaby. “I grew up with no money, and wanted a way out. For me I wasn’t going to be a brain surgeon, so I had to find another way, and for me that was hockey.”

One of the things Barnaby has cherished about the book process are the interactions with fans, during the book signings.

“The book signings have been great,” said Barnaby. “Being retired I don’t miss playing the game, but you do miss the fans. It’s just nice to be appreciated!”

The book’s release has created some controversy recently, as the Buffalo Sabres organization announced they would not be selling the book in team stores.

Barnaby had this to say to Pedersen regarding the Sabres decision.

“No one’s going to go to jail as a result of this book, no marriages are gonna be broken up. Are there great stories and stuff that will blow you away? Yeah there’s some inside the NHL stuff in the book.”

Barnaby plans on doing more book signings to promote ‘Unfiltered’.

“We’re going back to Buffalo, in a few weeks,” said Baranby. “Then going on to Toronto, and finishing up in Ottawa before the New Year.”

The hardcover copy of ‘Unfiltered’ is available for purchase in Chapters and Indigo shops across Canada. For a personalized copy go to MatthewBarnaby36.com.
