Quarterback Chad Kelly rushed for three touchdowns to lead the defending CFL champion Toronto Argonauts to a convincing season-opening 32-14 win against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats yesterday at BMO Field. The Tiger-Cats, who lost 42-31 in Week 1 to the host Winnipeg Blue Bombers, slipped to 0-2. Besides his three rushing touchdowns, Kelly completed 14 of 23 passes for 208 yards.

Wyndham Clark is the US Open champion and certainly played the part. All he did yesterday was hold his nerve against a world-class collection of contenders. Clark held off Rory McIlroy to win by one shot at Los Angeles Country Club. Just two months ago the 29-year-old from Denver was looking for his first PGA Tour title. Now he has two wins and is a major champion. And he likely will be part of the Ryder Cup team this fall.

The Toronto Blue Jays have lost four of six games and two series on their current road trip. They’ll finish the trip with three games against the red-hot Miami Marlins, starting Monday at LoanDepot Park. The Jays blew a 6-0 lead on Sunday to the Texas Rangers and wound up losing 11-7. The Jays record slipped to 39-and-34, including 20-and-21 on the road. They remain fourth in the five-team A-L East standings.

Trevon Scott’s season-high 22 points led the Calgary Surge (6-3) in the battle for the west as they got a 97-81 win against the Winnipeg Sea Bears (5-3) on Sunday. The guard’s scoring output surpassed his previous mark by eight points, which was unsurprising considering he shot a stellar 62 per cent from the field. Scott’s performance helped his team hold onto first place in the Western Conference and snap their two-game losing streak. It was also the Surge’s best offensive night of the season as they passed the 90-point mark for the first time this year.

Meanwhile the Scarborough Shooting Stars (3-4) used stingy defence and transition opportunities to knock off the Brampton Honey Badgers (4-4) for the second time this season in a 93-73 win at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre on Sunday night.

The United States got first-half goals from Chris Richards and Folarin Balogun and defeated Canada 2-0 in the CONCACAF Nations League final on Sunday night in Las Vegas. It was the Americans second straight Nations League title. Canada held an edge in shots on target, ball possession and passing accuracy, but couldn’t score on goalkeeper Matt Turner. Mexico edged Panama 1-0 in the third-place match.

Canada will be shooting for a gold medal today at the U-16 Americas Women’s Basketball Championship in Mexico, but they’ll have to defeat the three-time defending champion U-S to reach the top of the podium. Canada advanced to the championship game with a convincing 77-49 victory over Puerto Rico in yesterday’s semifinal action. The U.S. crushed Argentina 112-48 in the other semifinal.

Bradley Beal is being traded to Phoenix, where he will form a new power trio alongside Kevin Durant and Devin Booker. The Washington Wizards and the Suns agreed to the deal yesterday, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations. The source says Phoenix has agreed to send Chris Paul, Landry Shamet and a package of future second-round picks to Washington for Beal, a three-time NBA All-Star.

Hi Rod, I’m enjoying most of the news and information I get from you and your contributors. I have a question for any and all football experts out there. After the Rider’s loss to the Bombers some agreed with Suits that Dickie should have pulled his QB which was a follow up to “he should have pulled him at the close of the first game” to avoid injury. I guess my question would be can only the losing QB be at injury risk at the close of a game he probably can’t win anymore. What about pulling Zack, he didn’t… Read more »
