COMMENTARY: WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?

Wednesdays are always for random thoughts on this commentary. Here we go:

#1 – Times are changing, and they’re changing fast. Over lunch with a Division 1 college football player on the weekend, he wouldn’t let me pick up the tab.

He tapped his pocket, smiled, and said, “I got that N-I-L money.” (If you don’t know what that is, look it up.)

The days of the starving college athlete seem to be over.

As John Frenzy would say, “Where do we go from here?”

#2 – The transaction really threw me for a loop because years ago famed hockey coach Lorne Molleken taught me that if you buy a guy lunch, he’ll be loyal to you forever.

It seemed to work for Mooner, who routinely had the media in his back pocket.

So I was attempting to do the same with this kid, but he turned the tables on me!

Guess I’m loyal to him now forever.

Again, where do we go from here?

My Dad woulda never let a player pick up the tab but this guy was twice the size of me and it all went down so fast.

There’s always next time.

#3 – Times are changing real fast in the media business too. A mile a minute, I’d say.

The suits are trying to figure out what the viewers and listeners want but they’ll never get a handle on that because everybody wants something different.

And then you have to decide if they’re tuned into the radio, television, livestreaming, podcast or website?

Thankfully we’ve worked it so that we’re on ‘em all.

And more than anything, I’m just glad that my hay’s in the barn. With over 40-million all-time hits to this website and growing faster than ever – and no plans to go anywhere – it’s just a war of attrition now. I’d hate to be just starting out in this perilous trade.

And now I get to sit back and let guys buy me lunch.
