Monday Commentary: You Had To Be There …

On Mondays on this Commentary we put a wrap on the weekend, and what a weekend it was.

How odd is it to be glad to get to Monday, so that things can slow down?

Truthfully it was a bit of a whirlwind getting back to Canada for the summer last week, attending Hall of Fame Rider broadcaster John Frenzy’s memorial service on Friday, then getting into the broadcast booth at Ross Wells Park in beautiful Moose Jaw, SK to call a pair of games for the Moose Jaw Miller Express of the Western Canadian Baseball League. (They’re 2-1 on the season, coming out of the weekend).

Whew! All that in just a couple of days.

For those who’ve asked, Frenzy’s event was sensational, attended by a nice blend of Rider fans and franchise greats, close friends of John’s and the Lynch family said they were very happy with how it all came off.

Famed Elvis tribute artist Rory Allen even performed three songs to the delight of many!

Some folks have asked if I could post or send a copy of my speaking notes from John’s service.

Sorry! This was a “you-had-to-be-there” type of deal.

Hockey playoffs?

The Oilers and Stars are 1-1 in the Western Final while the NY Rangers lead Florida 2-1 in the Eastern Final after a really wild 5-4 OT win Sunday night in Sunrise.

Panthers fans seem really upset at a deliberate elbow thrown by Rangers captain Jacob Trouba on Florida’s Evan Rodrigues which wasn’t called a 5-minute major in Game 3.

My take – if you live by the sword, you die by the sword.

That’s in sports, and life. So you’d better be careful, cuz the hockey gods never get things wrong.

And finally my sense is that Rider fans are cautiously optimistic following Saturday’s 28-27 preseason win at Edmonton, leaving the Rider Priders at 2-0 and having the benefit of getting their exhibition games done early. That leaves them extra time to prepare for their Week 1 showdown at Edmonton.

The biggest topic out of it all is who will be the #2 quarterback behind Trevor Harris this season? I’m not sure they’ve found the answer yet.

And after all that we’ll be back on the RP Show today at Noon ET on Game+ TV live from the Moose Jaw Events Centre, home of the Warriors, who play tonight at the Memorial Cup.

It’s nice to be back in the swing of things!

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

It wasn’t a 5 minute major because his elbow made contact with his shoulder first then slid up .

I agree with Erasmus Lightwatch – it was an inadvertant brushing – a real elbow is the one Mark Messier laid on Rick Natress at the blue line back in the day – elbow right through the earhole which lead to a concaved skull. He put another one on the forehead of some Russian in a Rendez Vous ’87 or Canada Cup.

Dale Hunter is coaching London today – go back and watch his on Gord Dineen.

Those are elbows – 2 minute minors.

Maybe these guys should be bubble wrapped if they thing otherwise.

The only person other than Florida that was upset over the alleged – deliberate elbow thrown by Rangers captain Jacob Trouba on Florida’s Evan Rodrigues would be CBC Social Gadfly/Virtue Signal Hire Jennifer Botteril…… In fact her explaining NHL playoff wars to Kevin Bieksa and Kelly Hrudey was something else. I reviewed it on PVR several times – to me it was an “inadvertant brushing”. Also we’re allowed to change our minds. I truly hope Edmonton goes down in the next three. When Edmonton whines that LaBamba was played for some former employee and a fan with a tale of whoa… Read more »

is that picture from Saturday’s home opener? I think I’m in it! We were sitting right behind home plate about 3rd row.
