Commentary: Rain Over Dust

Whaddya know – it’s Wednesday! And time for some random thoughts …

#1 – You wouldn’t know it by the thermometer, but summer’s here on the prairies. It seems to be one of the wettest ones on record but as a farmer in Moose Jaw told me at Wednesday’s Millers baseball game, “I’ll take rain over dust any day.”

There you have it.

#2 – Don’t look now, but Canada Day marked the official halfway mark of the WCBL season. The Moose Jaw Miller Express are on a 4-game win streak and the second half looks bright.

The three month season is perfect and this has been a ball. Getting to meet and spend time with the players’ families has been a real bonus too.

Come on out to Ross Wells Park sometime!

#3 – A lot of those Millers families will be headed to Mosaic Stadium for Thursday’s Rider game; the kickoff to Week 5 in the CFL.

It was supposed to be Chad Kelly versus Trevor Harris but now it’s Cameron Dukes versus Shea Patterson.

People plan and God laughs!

The Argos are favoured by three at some sportsbooks, but I’ll take the Riders to win their fourth in a row.

But if they can’t beat Toronto with a back-up QB, things are going to get grim fast.

#4 – I’ll be interested to see what the attendance for Thursday’s game is. School’s out and the farmers aren’t in the fields. There’s no reason not to have a big crowd.

And #5 – If you haven’t checked out the CEBL’s Saskatchewan Rattlers yet, they’re home Friday night to the Scarborough Shooting Stars at SaskTel Centre. The Rattlers are 5-7 but just signed reigning league MVP Teddy Allen, and he’ll play Friday night.

I don’t know why Teddy was on the street but for that reason, right now the CEBL can thank their lucky stars that they’re an under-the-radar league.
