COPA AMERICA

Argentina, aiming to win a record 16th Copa America title, got goals from Julian Alvarez and Lionel Messi as they defeated the underdog squad from  Canada 2-0 in semifinal action Tuesday night. More than 80-thousand fans filled MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, to watch the match. Argentina will face either Uruguay or Colombia in Sunday’s final. Canada plays for third on Saturday against the loser of the Uruguay-Colombia semifinal — that’s scheduled for Wednesday.

MLB

The San Francisco Giants, trailing 3-2 and down to their final out, rallied to beat the visiting Toronto Blue Jays 4-3. Starting pitcher Yusei Kikuchi recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts over seven-and-a-third innings, but the bullpen couldn’t seal the deal. A bright spot was the Jay’s Ernie Clement, who hit a three-run dinger despite having their two-game win streak snapped.

  • The Edmonton Stingers’ playoff spot will have to wait. Calgary crashed its Alberta rival’s party on Tuesday at the Edmonton Expo Centre, racing to an 87-58 victory and holding the Stingers to a franchise-low point total in the process. The Surge moved back to .500, improving to 7-7 with the win. The Stingers dropped to 11-5 with the loss.
  • Khalil Ahmad and Aaryn Rai combined for 45 points to help the Niagara River Lions (10-5) defeat the Scarborough Shooting Stars (7-7) 98-77 on Tuesday night. The River Lions propelled themselves to victory with a massive 32-point second quarter in which they built a 15-point lead that they would never relinquish.

WNBA

The race for WNBA Rookie of the Year honours continues to be a tight one between the Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark and the Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese. The duo have enjoyed record-setting rookie seasons, so it’s no surprise they’re the frontrunners for the award. At the halfway point, the panel also unanimously voted Las Vegas forward A’ja Wilson player of the year and Cheryl Reeves of the Minnesota Lynx coach of the year.
