It’s Tuesday and time for this week’s The Good, The Great & The Ugly!

First the good: The Paris Olympics begin in earnest on Friday. In a poll of RP Show viewers, over 60% said they were not excited about the Games but I have a feeling that’ll change once we’re inundated with coverage from France.

Back in the day I’d spend 10 hours a day watching the Olympics – the Michael Phelps 10 gold medal performance comes to mind – but although I won’t hit anywhere near that this summer, I’ll be keeping an eye on it for sure and that’s good.

The events I’m most interested in are basketball, table tennis and rowing but I’ll watch as much as I can.

Next the great: The CFL is mourning the loss of longtime Argonauts player, broadcaster and Alumni President Pete Martin at age 83 this week.

I nicknamed Pete, “Captain Argo” because he was the true embodiment of the Toronto Argonauts. Pete was even from there, raised on a farm just outside Scarborough, Ontario.

For years he did colour with Argos radio and that’s where I got to know him very well, plus at all the Alumni events at Grey Cup.

That was a time before Iphones and even digital cameras, so I don’t have any pics of the many interviews we did together over the years at Skydome and Taylor Field.

But the life and impact of Pete Martin were … great.

And lastly the ugly: The media coverage of the new Home of the Flames, Scotia Place in Calgary, has been very positive and it’ll be fun to attend games there in the coming years.

But lost in the shuffle, as usual, are the Calgary Stampeders. While Monday’s announcement was going on and there was plenty of back-patting between the hockey, business and political types, Stamps fans took to social media to ask “What about us?”

Built in 1960, McMahon Stadium is the second-oldest facility in the CFL, behind Montreal’s McGill Stadium which opened in 1915.

It would seem there are no plans, nor even any talk, of a new Home for the Stampeders.

And that’s as disappointing as it is ugly.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.

The Good The only interest I have in the Olympics is finding the Reddit stories on what happens in the Athletes Village. These “amateurs” work secondary jobs to support their training. They are 1%’ers and added to their athletism is a all the human growth hormone, testosterone enhancements, and masking agents. After that first week when they get done. PARTEE!!!! If anyone thought there were enough crushed beer cans out at Craven to make a Tractor/Trailer – the Athletes village has so many used profolactics they could be recycled to put tires on it. The Great  Pete Martin – it’s a… Read more »
