Friday Commentary: Unpredictable
(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on the All New Hits 98 CKHD & LTD Radio)
A coupla three or so thoughts entering the weekend …
#1 – I’m getting real good at blocking out the noise!
The NFL preseason kicked off Thursday night with the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, OH and despite it being called due to a bad storm with three minutes to go in the third quarter, Brett Rypien managed to throw three touchdowns in Chicago’s 21-17 win over Houston.
Brett is the nephew of Mark Rypien, the greatest Canadian to ever play in the NFL and a former Super Bowl MVP.
I managed to avoid all the poo-poo’ing of people who said preseason doesn’t matter, and enjoyed following the game.
Ask me how sometime.
#2 – One thing the CFL has going for it is unpredictability.
In a massive upset, Winnipeg shutout BC 25-0 Thursday night at Princess Auto Stadium to get back into the West Division playoff race.
That puts the Bombers at 3-6. Don’t look now, but that represents the halfway mark of the season!
Also, BC’s starting quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. left the game with injury as the Lions fell to 5-3.
Like I said. Unpredictable.
#3 – Some friends – Sask Party MLA Barret Kropf and wife Bridget – bought tickets to the Saskatoon-Moose Jaw WCBL game at Ross Wells Park last night and asked how early they should get there.
I said, “As early as possible. We sellout every game.”
But NDP leader Carla Beck was there too, and her nephew Carter Beck and the Berries stole the show as Saskatoon won 5-4 and pretty much secured a first round playoff meeting between the Miller Express and Regina Red Sox.
There was competition on the diamond, and in the seats.
And #4 – I found this funny: One of the great joys of calling Millers games this summer is hearing from the players’ families, particularly those scattered all across the US. One player’s mom messaged me during Thursday night’s game to express how much she enjoys my “equality” on the broadcasts (calling it right down the middle, with no home team bias).
I had a good belly laugh on that one, and told her she should’ve known me 20 years ago!
See – people can change.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.

Election Year people and yes it matters. SP Barret Kropf is legit good people. He was a Hockey Coach out in Briercrest and a true sportsman. The NDP agree with the opening Olympics drag skit and want the Teachers not to call the parents with what’s going on with their mentally ill child. In fact they support the Algerian Boxer who failed a gender test and pummeled that girl boxer in 40 seconds. Other than local ties a long time ago I finally have something in common with NDP Carla Beck. If you ever get a “famous” relative that ends… Read more »
Actually Carla was one of several Becks who showed up to the game to watch Carter, and I don’t think she posted anything! 😂
We may not agree on politics but she’s a great person.
Respect
Well Rod, politics aside, is VA back to the old VA? Off target, throwing late and just terrible. We have an opportunity to pick up a game on them Lions. Let’s go RIDERS!
Every QB gets hurt eventually. He’ll be back soon.
#3 If television ratings mean anything I guess I’ve done my part. I haven’t watched one moment of the olympics.
Initially it was because the IOC ruled Russian individules could compete.
Then I saw all of the commotion about the opening ceremonies.
Now the headline grabber is men in women’s boxing.
As far as I’m concerned the IOC has no credability left.
