A coupla three or so thoughts entering – what they say is — the biggest football weekend of the year!

#1 – The NFL season kicked off last night in Kansas City. The Chiefs began their quest for a 3-peat with a 27-20 victory over the visiting Baltimore Ravens. The game went down to the very last play, as a Ravens game-tying touchdown was reversed due to review.

Two-time league MVP Lamar Jackson is now 1-5 against Kansas City and the pundits say he “just can’t beat the Chiefs”.

I say … “yet”.

For now the Ravens are little brother. Just like what the Florida Panthers were to the Tampa Bay Lightning for years here.

But it’s a watershed day when little brother overtakes big brother, and that’s why you can’t ever give up.

The Ravens will have their day. Maybe even later this season.

#2 – Speaking of hockey, Saturday’s WHL preseason game between the Moose Jaw Warriors and Regina Pats at Southland Coop Centre in Assiniboia is soldout!

I’m a little jealous for those who’ll be in attendance. We had the great fortune to broadcast the first ever junior game in that gorgeous facility, on this very radio station!

The brand-building in that town with the young people for these teams will be unforgettable.

Have fun!

And #3 – The 20th Banjo Bowl will be played Saturday in Winnipeg between the Riders and Bombers.

The tradition began in 2004 and Winnipeg is 12-7 in the game all-time, including winning seven of the past eight.

I’m a tad surprised the Bombers are only favored by 1.5-points as they’ve won four in a row, while the Riders are winless in six.

I appreciate the Rider fans who’ve written into our channel apologizing for their harsh comments earlier in the season, and realizing now what we were saying about the Riders’ shortcomings (flimsy roster). I’m not one to say ‘I told you so’, so I appreciate their admissions. Actually … I am! But in this case, I’ll reserve comment because enough’s been said already, and people know my thoughts.

Now let’s wait to see how it all plays out.

But that’s why they play the games!

It’s undoubtedly the game of the weekend; Week 1 of the NFL included.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.

I said day 1 and probably back in February what was coming down the river with regards to the Saskatchewan Roughridres. They have 5 wins and I predicted 6. This weekend Edmonton is going to handle Calgary and BC is going to win along with Regina. On Monday the D.E.I Board can ask some questions. My guess is they’ll know about as much of what’s going on as Taylor Swift did last night at that KC/Baltimore game. As for the biggest football weekend. Until hockey starts this is good stuff. With that stated regarding the NFL. I was at the… Read more »

Well I guess they better start spending some marketing money on that flimsy roster, or maybe just cut all the flimsy players along with the flimsy management and close the doors … if you know the reason why don’t they?

Everything about the rider franchise is flimsy, the organizational structure as a whole along with its mandate, board of directors who have never played a down of football in their lifetime calling the shots in a professional sports league (B of D should be former players who have played the game and know how to proceed and suceed on the field with CFL Championship results) plus the team management operations all wrong to a professional sports entity. The riders have become a bloated corporation with every imaginable made up staff position just to appease a Old Boys Club laying low… Read more »

My use of this blog has been a blessing. I believe I’m now in a situation where if the young guys are not getting help them with the now international reach I’m able to do so. From an Old Guy to the Young Guys: Taylor Swift at the Chiefs game? – when a 34 year old shows up and last year it was her in the boyfriends jersey yada yada; here’s how this is going down. Look At Me Girls that like the NFL are defined as: A specific type of girl, usually very good looking, who uses her looks… Read more »
