Commentary: The Game Of Life

Mondays are for recapping the weekend on this Commentary and today it’s a case of good news/bad news. Whaddya want first?

The good news? Okay.

It was a glorious NFL Sunday with a lot of unpredictable results and close games.

Sure, my Dallas Cowboys got blownout 44-19 by the visiting New Orleans Saints, but quarterback Dak Prescott and owner Jerry Jones say we shouldn’t be too concerned about it.

It’s a “learning experience”, they say.

Hey – I’ve got no choice but to trust them and besides, I didn’t lose a second’s sleep over it.

There were only three CFL games on the weekend and I came up empty in my picks there. Toronto upset the Lions in BC, Hamilton didn’t allow Ottawa to clinch a playoff spot by beating the RedBlacks at Tim Hortons Field and Montreal tied Calgary.

Again, no sleep lost by yours truly.

The bad news – the kind that kept me up at night – was that former Roughriders lineman Ben Fairbrother was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident Friday in Edmonton.

Ben’s family announced the death on the weekend, and he leaves kids and a wife behind.

Ben wasn’t the reckless sort, and I’m not sure I even want to know all the details of the accident.

This comes on the very week where beloved Roughriders coach Ken Miller will be remembered at a Memorial on Wednesday at Christ The King Parish in Regina.

It’s been a rough year on the Rider Nation, hasn’t it?

So forgive me for not losing sleep over the results of football games.

The game of life has far bigger consequences.
