A coupla three or more thoughts entering the weekend …

#1 – Can’t believe the furor around Wednesday’s announcement that the NHL will host outdoor games here in Florida next year!

Clearly the news is getting the thumbs up from Florida hockey fans but northerners – some may even call them purists – feels it’s absurd to try to play hockey outside in the Sunshine State.

Umm … Gary Bettman doesn’t agree with you.

I’ll be there, and can’t wait!

#2 – In my eyes, the NHL can do no wrong. That’s not butt-kissing; it’s just fact. And I don’t really know why but I’m comfortable with it.

Similar to those beloved diehard CFL fans who feel the three-down game has no faults and doesn’t need to change. There are a lot of those people!

It’s why you don’t hear me picking about the CFL anymore.

Newsflash: Constantly exposing the flaws of something – or someone – isn’t going to endear you to them!

Y’er welcome.

#3 – Speaking of, an RP Show viewer from Ottawa mentioned Thursday that with Rick Campbell returning to the Ottawa Redblacks as Special Teams Coordinator, perhaps head coach Bob Dyce has hired his own replacement?

I don’t mean to denigrate the viewers, but that’s defeatist thinking. Put it this way – if you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.

I’ll have more on that in this weekend’s 10 Things column in our newsletter, available for free right now by signing up at RodPedersen.com.

And #4 – It was a classic finish in the Orange Bowl. A late interception snagged by a Notre Dame defender in the final minute allowed the Fightin’ Irish to kick a field goal and beat Penn State 27-24 here in Miami Gardens.

The Irish covered the 1-point spread and are off to the College Football National Championship Game against the winner of tonight’s Cotton Bowl between OSU and Texas.

The words of famed Winnipeg broadcaster Cactus Jack Wells are echoing in my ears today …

“And it all turned out nice again.”

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.

The universe and God for that matter is proof addresses do not get missed. Brian Kelly leaves Notre Dame for LSU as he believes he can’t win a National Title. That was under the old system. To go to N.D vs LSU for an entrance requirement are two separate entities. Turn it into pro football and Notre Dame are the New York Giants. It gets turned around that quick. Yes – coaching matters. As for Penn St. That can be the school Jerry Sandusky and Joe Paterno ran. Texas vs Ohio St. They have facilities and operating budgets that are… Read more »
