Commentary: Maybe It’s Time

A coupla three or more thoughts entering the weekend …
#1 – In the end, the Edmonton Oilers did their talking on the ice. In the NHL’s most-anticipated game of the year so far, the Oil whomped the Vancouver Canucks 6-2 Thursday night at Rogers Place.
It came on the heels of Saturday’s 3-2 loss at Vancouver, when Connor McDavid crosschecked the Canucks’ Conor Garland in the face, drawing a 3-game suspension.
Even without McDavid, Edmonton pasted their Western Canadian rivals, in fact leading 3-0 after the first period with back-up Calvin Pickard between the pipes.
I’m sure the NHL didn’t want to suspend its best player, but felt the need to send a message. (Whatever that message was).
And this may be enough motivation to propel the Oilers all the way to the Stanley Cup.
#2 – So many CFL fans have asked my thoughts on the Players Association filing a grievance on the 2-game suspension for defensive back Loucheiz Purifoy this week for his use of Adderall, a medication used to deal with ADHD.
Notice that, to be clear, the P-A is not appealing the suspension. Perhaps it’s because Edmonton cut Purifoy ahead of the suspension, meaning he doesn’t even have a team to be suspended from.
My thoughts? It’s extremely unfortunate but just chalk up another player chewed up and spit out by the machine that is pro football.
“Louch” has had a great career. But maybe now it’s time …
And #3 – The NFL is down to its Final Four with the Conference Championships being played on Sunday. It’s Washington at Philadelphia in the NFC and Buffalo at Kansas City in the AFC.
My preseason pick was a Detroit-Kansas City Super Bowl, but the Lions blew that up by losing last weekend.
So … I’ll go with the oddsmakers favourites and the home teams to win this weekend … Eagles and Chiefs to advance to Super Bowl XLIX in New Orleans.
As usual, do not take that to the bank.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
