Commentary: Serendipity

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on the All New Hits 98 CKHD & LTD Radio)
My life has turned out to be rather serendipitous as of late.
I’ll save you the time of looking it up by telling you the definition. It’s: the gift of finding valuable things that weren’t looked for.
I’d toss in that it’s the presence of welcome coincidences too.
Last night I was back behind the microphone for the Wellington (FL) Wolverines and got to meet more of the players’ parents prior to game time. One was 16-year Major League’er Curtis Pride, a former Montreal Expo who gained fame for being MLB’s first-ever deaf player, and served as MLB’s Ambassador for Inclusion.
Despite his disability, he could converse just fine and we talked of his time in Montreal, how much he loved it, and his desire for Major League Baseball to return to Quebec one day.
(It’s given me some fodder for today’s RP Show).
His wife Lisa is a baseball broadcaster and we did the game together, and got on well.
Then, as luck would have it, my good friend Cameron Hughes (the King of Cheer) pointed out he’s a good friend of the Pride family, and was in Montreal this past weekend for the launch of Curtis’s book I Could Feel The Cheers with the forward written by Cal Ripken Jr.
Will Major League Baseball ever return to Montreal? I seriously have my doubts and think there’s a far better chance of an NBA team calling Montreal home before baseball goes back there.
But it’s fun to talk about, and even more fun to recall the Expos moments of our youth; watching the games on CBC English & French, and collecting baseball cards.
Never in one million years did I think my life would take this turn into America’s favorite pastime, and a world filled with some of the most wonderful people in sport.
You’ve just gotta be open to change.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
