It’s Wednesday and time for some Random Thoughts:

#1 – Fall is for football but it’s still summer and baseball is on centre stage right now. Where to start? Rogers Centre was packed Tuesday night as the Blue Jays opened a 3-game series with the Chicago Cubs. Ernie Clement had a 3-run homerun as the Jays went on to win 5-1 and no one left their seat till the final out. What a scene!

Meanwhile the Regina Red Sox are off to the Western Canadian League final after dispatching the Saskatoon Berries 6-2 in the decisive game Tuesday and will host the Sylvan Lake Gulls in Game 1 of the championship on Thursday. How many can they cram into Currie Field?

If they want a new ballpark, this will help.

#2 – I’m on the road to Calgary again, and am real excited about it! Theoren Fleury’s 4th Annual Breaking Free Foundation Golf Classic goes Thursday in Cowtown and we’ll be broadcasting the RP Show live from Golf Fanatics before I get to MC the supper and Hot Stove.

I’ll be in YYC for less than 24 hours but when Theo asks for something, I’m there. He does the same for me.

And #3 – It’s just a real fun time in sports. You’d have to be dead not to feel the buzz around here for Saturday’s first-place showdown between the Roughriders and Tiger-Cats at Mosaic Stadium. It truly is a battle for midseason supremacy in the CFL and really, that’s all I’m watching for.

Ticats co-owner Jim Lawson was on the RP Show Saturday promoting Saturday’s 166th running of the King’s Plate, as he’s the Executive Chair of Woodbine Racetrack. But he said he’d rather have talked about the Riders & Tabbies match-up!

Next time.

But perhaps the best news from our chat will provide some comfort for longtime CFL fans who are worried about the league’s survival.

Lawson said the CFL isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

High Praise to Theo Fleury; Spittin’ Chicklets interviewed “Hall of Famer” Pierre Turgeon. These young guys are lapping up his stories….nobody asked him why he was sitting on the bench while a bench clearing brawl is going on. Theo was first one in to defend guys. Theo and Dale; I guess where the HOF is concerned they just ain’t their kind…. CFL: Luke Willson is radio silent. Poke the bear where MLSE/Toronto attendance is concerned or yap regarding Hamilton until Bob Young/Jim Lawson has had enough. The kid did so at his peril. He can’t say he wasn’t warned. Safe… Read more »

I agree that the world seems to have lost its collective minds these days, but come on. To say that a black man (head of the PA, no less) has lips like Michelin tires in an email in mixed company is next level stupid. Having said that, cancelling Gruden is dumb too. He’s not a criminal, just a jackass. Reinstate him and let the chips fall where they will. I don’t agree with all of Fleury’s takes on life but for that man to even be upright and functional after everything he has been through, I salute him every day… Read more »

We are infallible human beings. 650,000 emails and Roger Goodell a NY Democrat released….11. When the man was not even working in the league. Legal discovery is gonna be sweet. Now the virtuous NFL will be begging to settle. Jon will not be laying down his sword. If anything it is going right through the leagues eyeball. In doing so he will be opening a big box of $ coming his way regardless. ….he is going to make an incredible SEC Head Coach….Florida, Arkansas. …wow. Let the record show. Day 1 of all this….I was the 1 lone guy that… Read more »
