SUNDAY SPORTS – SASK DROPS OPENER AT BRIER

Manitoba’s Reid Carruthers and Quebec’s Martin Crete take perfect 1-0 records into their matchup against each other this morning at the Tim Hortons Brier. Manitoba edged Saskatchewan while Quebec downed Yukon yesterday at the Canadian men’s curling championship in Brandon, Manitoba. A full slate of three draws is scheduled today.

Jarome Iginla had his Number 12 jersey retired by the Flames last night although Calgary couldn’t get him a win. The Flames fell 4-2 against the Minnesota Wild. In other action around the NHL, Toronto beat Buffalo 5-2, Edmonton shut out the Blue Jackets 4-0, Montreal fell 5-1 against Pittsburgh and the Senators lost 5-1 against Tampa Bay.

The Winnipeg Jets aim to extend their lead atop the Central Division tonight when they visit the Columbus Blue Jackets. Winnipeg jumped over Nashville for top spot in the division on Friday when it beat the Predators 5-3. Elsewhere today, the Canucks are in Las Vegas to face the Golden Knights and Ottawa visits Florida.

Kawhi Leonard and the Toronto Raptors are in Detroit tonight to face former coach Dwane Casey and the Pistons. Leonard hit the winning shot in Toronto’s thrilling win over Portland at home on Friday night. The Raps are 9-and-1 in their last 10 games and have won two straight. Detroit beat Toronto in the previous meeting this season between the two teams.

Matt Shoemaker makes his second start of the spring this afternoon when the Toronto Blue Jays take on the New York Yankees in Dunedin, Florida. Shoemaker struck out one in two innings of work in his first start. He’s expected to be a fresh face in Toronto’s rotation this season. Domingo German counters for New York.

Vijay Singh has a chance to become the oldest winner ever on the PGA Tour today at The Honda Classic. The 56-year-old is one shot behind leader Wyndham Clark entering the final round after shooting a 5-under 65 yesterday. Roger Sloan, Nick Taylor and Adam Svensson are the top Canadians in a tie for 19th.
