WEDNESDAY RIDER PRACTICE NOTES

REGINA – The Saskatchewan Roughriders held a closed practice on Wednesday for Day 2 of their practice week as they prepare for Saturday’s home game against the Montreal Alouettes (7:00 pm, TSN, CKRM Rider Radio Network).

Here are some notes:

– After the session Head Coach & GM Chris Jones said the club has added a quarterback to their roster but refused to disclose his identity.

– The team later announced the QB is import Devin Gardner.

– Jones said Duron Carter saw reps on both offense and defense during Wednesday’s practice.

– Veteran Rider CB Jovon Johnson offered these thoughts on Carter playing in the secondary.

“Duron is Duron,” Johnson laughed. “He’s a character and he keeps the energy high in the room. He gives us a lot to look forward to. We love him but we wish we could get him back on offense to catch balls because that’s where he’s the most impactful. He’s made some plays for us though and he’s a great guy to come in and fill in.”

– Safety Marc-Olivier Brouillette said the club vows not to overlook the 0-2 Alouettes in Week 3 however their focus right now is strictly on their own issues coming out of their 40-17 loss in Ottawa in Week 2.

“We’re just focused on what we do because we know that we have enough talent in this locker room that if we play the way we’re supposed to, we can beat anybody we line up against,” said the former longtime Alouette. “I think the real motivation is for us to improve and not compare ourselves to past performances.”

– Jovon Johnson said the Alouettes’ offense poses a lot of challenges despite their early-season struggles.

“They got a lotta team speed,” Johnson offered. “Their running back is their biggest asset right now. But their receivers are very good. They can stretch the field. We just gotta be good with our eyes and our technique, and let out front go to work.”

– The Riders are back on the field for Day 3 on Thursday with an open practice.

– The forecast for Saturday’s game calls for sunshine and 23 degrees Celsius.
