RED SOX 9 CARDINALS 1

The Regina Red Sox rode an early 6-0 lead to a 9-1 victory over the visiting Yorkton Cardinals Tuesday at Currie Field.

The Eastern Division Leading Red Sox sent Taft Community College sophomore Will Moore to the mound. Moore, the winning pitcher, threw 4.2 innings allowing just one run on five hits and four walks before Manager MacDonald went to the bullpen. Preston Minor, local product Kendal Daniels, Justin Magstadt and Kevin Borst all pitched in relief.

Justin Johnson started for the Cardinals and suffered the loss. He lasted five innings giving up seven runs on eight hits.

Walker McCleney was one of the offensive bright spot pounding a home run over the right field wall in the third inning.  Hank Forest also added three hits for the Cardinals.

Antonio Torres’ homer in the bottom of the seventh brought the 608 fans at Currie Filed to their feet. It was the first WMBL home run for Torres. The speedy Justin Earlandson, from Utah valley, chipped in with a double and a triple in the Red Sox win.

At the end of the night, Regina improved to 17-8 and Yorkton dropped to 7-18.

The WMBL announced the Stars of the Week today. Justin Vernia of the Okotoks Dawgs was named Pitcher of the Week. Outfielder Justin Erlandson from the Regina Red Sox was awarded the WMBL Player of the Week.

Honourable mention was given to a pair of Fort McMurray pitchers, John Reid and Tyler Hodder.  Medicine Mavericks Chris Caffrey and Caleb Longley also received honourable mention as Player of the Week.

Pitcher of the Week
Justin Vernia – Okotoks
Justin Vernia earned Pitcher of the Week honours for his outstanding performance against the Lethbridge Bulls on June 30. The University of Gonzaga product picked up a victory after tossing eight innings of shutout ball. Vernia also added eight strikeouts in the contest.

Player of the Week
Justin Erlandson – Regina
Regina Red Sox outfielder Justin Erlandson was named the WMBL Player of the Week. Erlandson accomplished one of the hardest feats in baseball when he hit for the cycle against Swift Current on June 29.  The senior from Utah Valley also scored three runs, had four hits and 3 RBI.
During the week, Erlandson scored 10 runs on nine hits with a double, two triples a home run and five RBI.
