RED SOX DOWN BEAVERS 5-3 ON OPENING DAY

It was opening day at Currie Field on Sunday and the Regina Red Sox did not disappoint the 750 fans in attendance.

Infielder Derek Slate collected three hits, scored two runs and stole a base as he sparked the Red Sox to a 5-3 victory over the Weyburn Beavers.

Regina got a quality eight inning start from Ben Schweinfurth.  The senior from Southwestern Oklahoma picked up the win, while allowing two earned runs, on just seven hits while striking out three. Sam Brunner threw one inning of relief for the save.

Cole Feazell started for the Weyburn Beavers and held the Regina Red Sox scoreless for six innings. Reliever Austin Perez, who was tagged for three runs in a third of an inning, took the loss for the Beavers.

Regina had five runs on nine hits while Weyburn scored three runs on eight hits but was also charged with three errors.

The Red Sox will host Yorkton on Tuesday night at Currie Field.
