RED SOX OFF TO ROUND 2

With a 5-1 win over Yorkton Thursday evening, the Regina Red Sox are advancing to the next round of the WMBL playoffs. Regina took the best of five series three games to one.

Gabe Snyder opened the scoring for the Red Sox when he delivered an RBI double in the fourth inning.

Yorkton’s Michael Schofield cracked a solo homer over the left field fence to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh.

The Red Sox broke the game open with four runs in the eighth inning. The first two scored on an error and a wild pitch, then centre fielder Zach Weatherford delivered a clutch two run double to make the score 5-1.

Regina got seven strong innings from starter Parks Smithey before summoning Louis Cohen from the bullpen in the eighth. The man with the WMBL’s best moustache, Mike Thill came on in the ninth to end the Cards season.

With the victory in Yorkton, the Red Sox now move on to the Saskatchewan Division final against the Weyburn Beavers.

The Beavers finished first overall in the Saskatchewan Division with a regular season record of 31-17. They went on to defeat Edmonton in four games in their first round playoff series.

Game one of the Red Sox – Beaver series is scheduled for Saturday night at Tom Laing Park.  Game two is set for Sunday in Weyburn while game 3 will be at Currie Field on Monday.
