ALOUETTES RELEASE TROY SMITH

The Montreal Alouettes announced on Thursday that the team has released international quarterback Troy Smith.

Smith (6’0”, 195 lbs.) joined the Alouettes on August 14, 2013 and started the last three regular season games as well as the East Division Semifinal, which the Alouettes lost in overtime. He was the Alouettes starter for the first six games of the 2014 season, before being placed on the six-game injured list.

During his time in Montreal, the former Heisman Trophy winner completed 143 of his 288 passes, gaining 1,873 passing yards, while throwing 13 touchdown passes and nine interceptions. He also rushed the ball 23 times good for 96 yards and two touchdowns.

he is far too young and wasn't retired. those are the pre-requisites the riders are looking for…..oh and mediocrity don't forget that. besides the crack scouting and management staff didn't see any potential in him. had to see him in games first. what a joke

We have a young stable of QB's this year and do not need to look at Smith.

Next year may be a different story!

He can't be picked up by anyone because he was released following the trade/roster deadline.

Basically, the ALS screwed him.

A former Heisman Trophy winner as a QB… Why not???

Let's remember folks, the Montreal regime at the beginning of this CFL year was horrible for anyone playing QB. Firing their Offensive Co-ordinator during training camp, then to have an inexperienced co-ordinator take over in Dinwiddie. Let's not be so hard on Smith, would it hurt to take a look???

Sure. May as well have 7 QB 's on the team. JT O'sulluvan played for the 49 ers too. Bring him in too. Take a look. That's 8. I think Graham Harrell is unemployed at the moment. That's 9…

Do I here 10…

First of all the Anon that stated we have a stable full of young QB's… Sorry we DO NOT!!! We have players with QB behind their name. However it does not make them a QB. Tino Sunseri has been a most inconsistant QB. All the way through his College Days and its continued here to the CFL. If you dont believe me. Do a google search using these exact words.pittsburgh Tino Sunseri is still not a leader.Until Durant is healthy. The Riders are in need of a QB badly. The CFL trade deadline came and went. The ALS released Smith… Read more »

Why isn't Price's name being thrown into the ring? A recent NFL cut (in shape), with wheels and the ability to extend drives and plays. He may not "know the playbook" but at least he has the skill set needed to get us some consistent production. Especially if Cortez is stuck on repeat with his play package.

Winning the Heisman trophy means nothing. It is a popularity contest amongst a group of athletes and the winner is the one that the university promoted the best. Get the QB with the best potential for our game, like the Stamps(Bo Levi), Lions(Lulay) etc have done, or take one some other team has recruited like the Esks(Reilly).

Wake up Reginald! There are only 3 games left in the season. Why the heck would we bring in a 7th QB at this stage. There is no time left to have another QB trying to learn the playbook. I can't believe how silly some of the fans have become.
There is no saviour out there. The fix is in until Durant gets back under center.

Given the Rider GM's penchant for signing cast offs, look for him in green and white soon.

HEY STUBBY… Name suites the comments. So Kerry Joseph can come in at this point but its stupid to bring in another QB that actually has played half a season this year. While Joseph has started 2 games in the last 3 years. You dont think these 3 games are important? It's not important to have a home playoff game. Giving the Team another Million plus dollars. Do you have a guarantee that Durant is coming back? Before you call people names maybe think a bit first. When Joseph fails miserably this coming Sunday. Lets see who thinks this idea wasnt such… Read more »

Everyone who has carried the moniker of "Quarterback" in the last several games has failed miserably. Has everyone forgot how brutal Sunseri was against the Esks a few weeks ago? Does everyone recall all the no nothings who thought his good 10 minutes against Calgary was setting him up for a great game against Montreal? Both huge miscalculations. Troy Smith may not be the answer but then again neither are Sunseri or Doege. Some young guys are players and leaders. They just take a team and win with then aka Lulay. These guys will never be that quality. Joseph may… Read more »

Here is a good one, what happens if Joseph gets hurt. Pick up Smith, he can't be worse than Sunseri or Doege and just by what I see now three of our present QB's should not be back next year. Smith played in a circus last year and could use a change, give him a chance. I am sure he could run a limited offence as good what we have.
