FORMER RIDER GM BEATEN, HOSPITALIZED

REGINA POLICE SERVICE NEWS RELEASE:

A twenty-nine year-old man has been charged in connection with a robbery yesterday evening outside a business in the 4000 block of Albert Street.  The victim is a 70 year-old male.

*EDITOR’S NOTE: The victim is former Saskatchewan Roughriders GM Alan Ford.*

Police were dispatched at approximately 4:11 p.m. on Monday, May 12, 2014, to a business in the 4000 block of Albert Street for a report of an assault in progress.  When police arrived, they located the victim, a 70 year-old male, who had been punched in the face; he was being assisted by other citizens, prior to EMS arrival.  Preliminary investigation indicates a male briefly entered the business and then exited the store, approached a customer and tried to rob him of his purchases.  When the victim resisted, he was punched in the face.  The suspect fled before police arrived.

Further investigation led to the identification of a suspect vehicle and the arrest, at about 7:40 p.m., of a male matching the description of the suspect.  The male was subsequently charged in connection with this incident and police are continuing their investigation to locate a possible second suspect.

Twenty-nine year-old Tyler Leon Joe ALEXSON, DOB: 1985-03-01, of Regina, is charged with Robbery/Assault With Intent to Steal [343(b) CC]; and two charges of Breach of Recognizance [145(3) CC].  ALEXSON will make his first appearance in Provincial Court at 2:00 p.m. today, Tuesday, May 13, 2014.  The investigation into this matter is ongoing.

To Al Ford and family,

Tough times don't last, but tough people do. You are all a walking testament to that ethos.

Growing up in Regina I loved so many things… The Roughriders, and the … hmmm… what else did I love about growing up there hmmm. I will have to think more about that one. Yesterday RP talked about the litter and trash on the streets. Today RP reports about a 70 year old man, former GM Al Ford, being robbed and assaulted. The sad reality is if it was not Al Ford we would not read about it on this blog, but likely somewhere in the Leader Post (a regular occurrence); point being, it is ongoing in Regina. I wish… Read more »

Glad they caught the scumbag. Beating up a 70 year old, yeah you're real tough. Judge should sentence the guy to five minutes alone with the Rider players in the dressing room and whatever happens happens.

Absolutely the best suggestion I've heard in years. Would endorse this wholeheartedly! O-Linemen get to go first. Lol!

I'm kind of thinking the thug is lucky that Al Ford is 70, because if he was 69, he probably kicks the punk's a$$.

Comment number 2 is down right stupid! First of all Robbery is not a regular occurrence in Regina. I read the Leader Post every day and I also listen to local Radio. So nice try smiley but your way off base!Second of all where do you live? When was the last time you were even in Regina? Regina has made huge strides the last 15 years. I remember when Naniamo was a dirty little City but it isnt anymore. Things change and things move forward.Walk around Downtown Vancouver smiley bright boy. Head through Famous or now infamous Gas Town and… Read more »

This happened on South Albert Street in South Regina where land of the entitled prevails.

The fact is Regina is and has long become a City where respect for your neighbour goes flying out the window….along with the trash bags for pick up.

Bill Parcells said you are your record. Well here's the facts. You have garbage strewn all over the City and you have 70 year old Senior Citizens getting physically assaulted in broad daylight.

…take away the I Love Regina campaign and that's the stark reality.

To the Anon saying,

Walk around Downtown Vancouver "smiley bright boy".

I am well aware and informed about both cities, but you may as well be comparing apples and oranges when compare and contrast Regina to Vancouver (so why do it).

Back to the subject… If Regina is so safe, and I am so ill-informed, then tonight you should head out and take a walk through the friendly confines of downtown Regina or any of its neighbouring communities. Get back to me with the results, and good luck with the gang warfare.

And here we go, Obama tries to turn this thread into a bitch-fest. I encourage all readers to ignore his comment and move along.

@ smiley bright boy….no aggressive pan handlers in downtown Regina huh? Seeing as I have to trudge thru the mess that is downtown Regina everyday for work I would have to say you are very uninformed about what it's actually like in Regina these days. Women who park just outside of the downtown core wait until I or another working male walks by so they can follow us in to the downtown area…..either I got a really nice butt or your take on the safety of Regina citizens is not shared by anyone who has to work downtown.

I have lived and worked in downtown Regina for 13.5 years. I have never ran into an aggressive pan handler, I tell them I have no money on me and every time they continue on their merry way. I have walked around downtown at 7 am, 3am and all times in between, and have never had a problem. Of course, a five foot four female might have a different experience than I, but contrary to popular belief downtown Regina is not a hive of crime.

I'm sure we all share the same feelings towards the victim and about the offenders this situation. However, these comments piling on the city/community are a bit much. As someone who found themselves at the scene between the time the police showed up and the EMTs arriving, what I noticed was that:– There were at least 4 cars that did not even waste their time to find a spot to park before those in them had left their vehicles to attend to the situation.– A crowd of concerned people stuck around to either help or see if there was anything… Read more »

Hey, 99.9999999% of people in society are just that, people who will stop dead in their tracks to help those in need. It's just the a-holes, the tiny fraction of the population, who get all the attention and give everyone else a bad name. Screw them.

I think it might be best to check with the city police to see if violent crimes have increased over the last 5 years. I am reading that gang activity has increased. Yes there are still good people in the Regina but the stats are telling us that things have changed.

Speaking of panhandling, the Roughriders have their hands out yet again asking the public for forty million dollars for the stadium, hmfpt !
