CORTEZ: “MARSHAWN WANTED TO QB”

George Cortez, currently the offensive coordinator for the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders, revealed an interesting tidbit this week about Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch.
Cortez was the offensive coordinator at the University of California while Lynch played there. According to Cortez, Lynch approached him after the Holiday Bowl in 2004 with an interesting proposal.
“He came up to me in the restroom and says, ‘I want to try out for quarterback this spring.’ I said, ‘Marshawn, it’s not Pop Warner. You’re a tailback’,” Cortez said.
“He probably was (serious), because he could throw it a long way. He was an incredible athlete, an incredible player.”
Lynch actually did play some quarterback (and some wide receiver and linebacker) at Oakland Technical High School, but he made the switch to running back once he made the varsity squad.
While not demonstrative of a monster arm, Lynch threw a pass to Seattle teammate Russell Wilson. Sure, it wasn’t exactly a thing of beauty, but it’s a hell of a lot prettier than what Marques Colston attempted against Seattle.

And in that subsequent season, Lynch went 1 for 2, completing a 21 yard pass for a TD.
Who cares, he plays where he belongs.
