THE TUESDAY MORNING GOALIE

A BUSHEL OF RANDOM THOUGHTS

1 – I’m shocked that the disease experts have no clue when the pandemic will end, and when the world will start spinning again. It’s been a month. Also the experts aren’t economists, and definitely aren’t capitalists. A prolonged lockdown just isn’t feasible. Is this currently a test of wills?

2 – The CEO of Walmart said the first thing to go was hand sanitizers, then toilet paper, then baking supplies (particularly yeast), then board games, then hair clippers and hair dye. What’s next?

3 – It will suck if there’s no CFL season, but it’s not tragic. The story of Colby Cave is tragic. Let’s keep things in perspective.

4 – Things I’ve learned during the pandemic: NBC Dateline’s Keith Morrison is listed as being from Lloydminster (the Sask side), not Star City, SK nor Brandon, MB, as was the rumour.

5 – Wow, wow, wow. A lot of football fans continue to be gleeful at the XFL’s demise, even after a lot of league employees took to social media to explain their feelings/situation. Peoples’ true colours are really coming out at this time.

Meanwhile it’s not fair to lump the XFL in with all other failed spring pro football leagues. If it wasn’t for the pandemic, the league wouldn’t have filed for bankruptcy. People are really getting a lesson in business here — with no money coming in, expenses can’t be covered. It’s pretty simple. Had things kept rolling, the XFL could’ve paid its staff. And there wasn’t likely much of a cash reserve built up.

6 – If 2020 was a movie, you’d walk out. Too unbelievable. Too gruesome.

7 – Note to Sportsnet: The Tampa Bay Lightning at Edmonton Oilers in 2018 does NOT qualify as a classic game.

8 – Members of the 1992 and 1993 Toronto Blue Jays felt like members of the family. In fact, they still do. The Riders had that with Weston Dressler, Chris Getzlaf, John Chick, Darian Durant, etc. The Oilers had it with Gretz, Mess, Coff, Andy, Grant Fuhr, Jari Kurri, etc. Will we ever see an era like this in pro sports again?

9 – Why don’t we hear of the U.S. exchange rate as a reason for crappy Canadian sports teams? That was the rallying cry of bad 1990s Canadian NHL teams.

10 – Are music videos still a thing? All I see on MTV is a marathon of The Nanny (not complaining) and over on CMT, reruns of Frasier.

11 – Can we temper the incessant bashing of Justin Trudeau? I get it – I’m as blue as they come – but Canadians voted him in. It’s going to be years before you can have your say again. Uncle.

12 – Looking at photos and watching video of games with full stadiums and boisterous crowds seems like a generation ago. IT WAS A MONTH AGO!

13 – Perhaps the best testament to Colby Cave is that he made it to the NHL on sheer hard work. He was never drafted, but he made it because he worked his ass off. His family and hometown have so much to be proud of.

14 – What will Canadian sports TV look like when we emerge from this? Will it be even MORE American programming like we’re seeing in the mornings, and not just Around The Horn, P.T.I. and the like? As one national broadcaster said to me, “The accounting department is running the networks.”

15 – As usual, the NHL teases Saskatoon/Saskatchewan. The hot girl indeed.

16 – Whatever happened to the kid from Two & A Half Men?

17 – Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott allegedly throws a party and flagrantly ignores rules of 10-or-more-at-a-gathering and proper social distancing. We’re surprised? These guys live in a dream world folks. It’s not new.

18 – Will the fad of “Going Live” on Instagram continue once the pandemic lifts? On any given night I’ve got 7-8 people hosting IG live broadcasts to fill the time, and stay relevant. It used to just be Dana White and Duron Carter.

19 – Kudos to the Dub for staying in the news, naming Edmonton’s Brad Lauer and Everett’s Dennis Williams as Conference Coaches of the Year. This, on the heels of the Silvertips and Hurricanes being named the top Marketing/Business franchises in the WHL.

20 – Boredom is a choice. Bored? Go pick garbage. There’s plenty of it out there, it’s a helluva workout, and you don’t need anyone around you.

Y’er welcome,
RP

Point #11….That is interchangeable, depending on which side of the border you’re on. Trudeau, Trump. Trump, Trudeau. Oh gawd how I hate politics!

Point #16….Angus T. Jones, the 1/2 in Two and a half Men, is now 26 years old.

#9 Quite obviously, the salary cap! In the 90’s there was no cap and teams paid players in Canadian dollars.

#11 Same can be applied to Trump. He was voted in through due process.

Well, Rod, the Conservatives got more votes than Trudeau & the Liberals. There isn’t a Liberal seat between Winnipeg & Vancouver, Quebecers voted Bloc, which had been reduced to unofficial party status, because they couldn’t hold their noses & vote Liberal. With a minority government if it ever comes to a non-confidence vote & they lose, IMO Trudeau may be shown the door. But we all know that so, sure, it’s getting old. As for the pandemic, there are tests ongoing which show some positive signs. But bringing drugs to market typically is a long process. Jason Kenny today talked… Read more »

You have great random thoughts: Here are mine: 1) There is no such thing as a Disease Expert – they should be called “Best Educated Guess” people. We had an opioid crisis then before we had an HIV crisis. We had a crime crisis. Nobody said in government to get rid of HIV we’re going to all unify for the great international poke out. Nobody in government said we need to deal with why people have an insatiable need to self-medicate – addictions = crime = jail when root causes are not addressed. Crime when it is legit crime is… Read more »
