TUESDAY COMMENTARY – FEBRUARY’S FOR FOOTBALL
(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)
IT’S ANOTHER BIG DAY IN FOOTBALL!
FEBRUARY 8TH IS THE OPENING OF CFL FREE AGENCY AND ALTHOUGH A LOT OF THE BIG NAMES ARE OFF THE BOARD – INCLUDING ZACH COLLAROS AND DUKE WILLIAMS – PLENTY REMAIN INCLUDING 2019 GREY CUP MVP ANDREW HARRIS.
IF MY SOURCES ARE CORRECT, THREE TEAMS ARE IN THE RUNNING TO SIGN THE FUTURE HALL OF FAMER, AND APPARENTLY TWO OF THEM ARE SASKATCHEWAN AND BC.
FROM MY VANTAGE POINT, THIS IS THE BIGGEST STORY TO OPEN THE WEEK. WINNIPEG FANS ARE DISAPPOINTED THEIR LOCAL HERO’S DAYS APPEAR TO BE DONE WITH THE BLUE BOMBERS, AFTER ACCOMPLISHING SO MUCH AFTER SIGNING WITH HIS HOMETOWN TEAM IN 2016.
HE’S A 3-TIME GREY CUP CHAMPION AND SIX TIME ALL STAR BUT AT AGE 34, THE BOMBERS SEEM TO FEEL HARRIS’S BEST DAYS ARE BEHIND HIM AND THEY’RE NOT INTERESTED IN PAYING WHAT HIS RESUME COMMANDS.
IS IT TRUE THE RIDERS ARE WILLING TO TAKE A GAMBLE ON HIM? AFTER LOSING STAR RUNNING BACK WILLIAM POWELL TO OTTAWA, THE RIDERS CERTAINLY NEED A GUY THAT CAN CHEW UP YARDS. HE CERTAINLY KNOWS THE INS AND OUTS OF THE POSITION AND ANDREW MAY BE WORTH PUTTING ALL THE EGGS IN THE BASKET FOR THE ONE-SHOT DEAL OF WINNING THE GREY CUP.
AS WE’VE NOTED MANY TIMES HERE AND ON THE RP SHOW, THE RIDERS VERY CLEARLY HAVE A PLAN FOR HOW THEY WANT TO ATTACK FREE AGENCY AND BE A GREY CUP FAVOURITE. IT’S JUST NOT CLEAR AT THIS POINT WHAT THAT PLAN IS.
SO WE’LL BE WATCHING THE FREE AGENT WIRE CLOSELY TODAY.
BUT OF COURSE WE’RE ALSO IN LOS ANGELES FOR THE SUPER BOWL AND I’VE GOTTA TELL YOU, IT’S PRETTY OVERWHELMING.
SKY SPORTS NFL ANALYST JEFF REINEBOLD WAS ON OUR SHOW MONDAY AND AS A VETERAN OF MANY SUPER BOWLS, HE’S ADVISED THAT THE INTENSITY ONLY RAMPS UP DAY BY DAY. FRANKLY I CAN’T IMAGINE WHAT IT’LL BE LIKE COME FRIDAY, OR BY GAME TIME ON SUNDAY FOR THE BENGALS AND RAMS.
MONDAY WAS SUPER BOWL OPENING NIGHT AND THANKFULLY THE TOPIC HAS TURNED FROM RACIAL CLAIMS AND TANKING ALLEGATIONS TO THE ACTUAL MATCH-UP FOR THE NFL TITLE GAME.
THE RAMS, OF COURSE, ARE ALREADY HERE AND THE BENGALS ARRIVE ON TUESDAY.
IT’S ONLY THE SECOND TUESDAY IN FEBRUARY, BUT THINGS ARE IN HIGH GEAR.
THAT’S TODAY’S ROD PEDERSEN COMMENTARY.
