WEDNESDAY COMMENTARY – DOES ANYBODY WANT TO WIN?

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 & Rock 98.5 FM)

AFTER WATCHING THE WINNIPEG JETS SLEEP WALK THROUGH THE FIRST PERIOD AGAINST VEGAS TUESDAY – NOT REGISTERING THEIR FIRST SHOT ON GOAL TILL THERE WERE FIVE MINUTES LEFT IN THE FIRST PERIOD – I GOT READY FOR BED.

ACTUALLY, I WATCHED THE FIRST INTERMISSION SHOW ON TSN3 AND HOST SARA ORLESKY DIDN’T EVEN WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE FIRST PERIOD AND HOW BAD IT WAS FOR THE JETS. SHE OPTED TO RECAP THE NHL TRADE DEADLINE WITH ANALYST DAVE POULIN.

SO IMAGINE MY SURPRISE WAKING UP TODAY TO SEE WINNIPEG ENDED UP SHUTTING OUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS 4-0.

YIKES! IT WAS THE SIXTH ROAD LOSS IN A ROW FOR VEGAS, A FRANCHISE RECORD. GOOD THING FOR WINNIPEG THEY WERE PLAYING THE UNDERMANNED KNIGHTS, BECAUSE ANYONE ELSE WOULD’VE PULVERIZED THEM.

AND I DON’T MIND, AT THIS POINT, ADMITTING TO BEING A LITTLE CONFUSED. IN A MUST-WIN GAME FOR BOTH TEAMS, NEITHER ONE WANTED TO WIN IT.

AND WHEN THEY WOKE UP TODAY, BOTH TEAMS WERE OUT OF THE PLAYOFF PICTURE AS WE ENTER THE FINAL MONTH OF THE REGULAR SEASON.

ASSUREDLY THE JETS WILL BE LOOKING FOR A NEW HEAD COACH WHEN THIS IS ALL OVER, UNLESS INTERIM DAVE LOWRY MIRACULOUSLY GETS THEM INTO THE POSTSEASON. THEY’D NEED TO PULL OUT A FLUKE LIKE LAST NIGHT, EVERY NIGHT, FOR THAT TO HAPPEN.

AS FOR THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS, THEY SEEM TO ALREADY HAVE RAISED THE WHITE FLAG ON THE SEASON AND LIKELY HAVE BEGUN LOOKING TOWARDS NEXT YEAR.

BUT THEY CAN’T FIRE THE COACH.

THEY’VE ALREADY DONE THAT.

THAT’S TODAY’S ROD PEDERSEN COMMENTARY.
