FRIDAY COMMENTARY – IN A FRENZY
(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98 FM & Rock 98.5 FM)
ROLLING INTO THE WEEKEND WITH SOME RANDOM THOUGHTS …
FIRST – NEWS GOT OUT THAT HALL OF FAME RIDER BROADCASTER JOHN FRENZY WAS HOSPITALIZED FOR A SPELL AND THAT’S TRUE, BUT HE WAS RELEASED AFTER AN 11 DAY STINT AND I HAD OCCASION TO VISIT WITH HIM AT HIS PALATIAL SOUTH REGINA ESTATE THURSDAY NIGHT.
AND HE’S IN A FRENZY. HIS RIDERS ARE ON A 3-GAME LOSING STREAK AND TRYING TO FIGURE THINGS OUT ON THIS BYE WEEK BEFORE HEADING INTO A GRUELING SCHEDULE TO FINISH OUT THE SUMMER.
FRENZY SAYS THIS YEAR’S RIDERS JUST AREN’T GOOD ENOUGH, AND THAT THERE’S NO WAY THEY’LL COMPETE IN THE GREY CUP AT MOSAIC STADIUM IN NOVEMBER.
DISCUSS AMONGST YOURSELVES.
SECONDLY – WE’RE WATCHING A GREASE FIRE UNFOLD BEFORE OUR VERY EYES. IT’S THE MONTREAL ALOUETTES.
THEY PUT UP A GREAT FIGHT, TIED WITH WINNIPEG GOING INTO THE FOURTH QUARTER THURSDAY NIGHT AT MCGILL, BUT CAME UNDONE IN THE FINAL PERIOD AND LOST 35-20.
BLUE BOMBERS ALUMNI DISGUISED AS CFL ANALYSTS SCORNED THE ALOUETTES ON TWITTER FOR THEIR LACK OF DISCIPLINE AND IT WAS DIRECT SHOTS AT ALOUETTES COACH AND GM DANNY MACIOCIA. HE FIRED THEIR OLD TEAMMATE KHARI JONES FOR THAT EXACT SAME REASON A MONTH AGO AND MONTREAL MAY IN FACT BE WORSE INSTEAD OF BETTER SINCE THE CHANGE.
THOSE FORMER BOMBERS ARE DOUG BROWN AND MILT STEGALL. ANOTHER FORMER BOMBER, MATT DUNIGAN, STARTED THIS BALL ROLLING LAST WEEK ON MONTREAL RADIO. KHARI HAS A LOT OF FRIENDS AND FANS ACROSS THE CFL, AND NOT JUST FORMER BOMBERS.
WHEN DOES ALS OWNER GARY STERN REALIZE HE WAS DUPED?
AND LASTLY, THE FLAMES CAN PUT THEIR FEET UP FOR THE REST OF SUMMER ALTHOUGH THEY LIKELY WON’T.
GM BRAD TRELIVING – A FORMER REGINA PAT – GOT NEWCOMER JOHNATHAN HUBERDEAU SIGNED TO AN 8-YEAR EXTENSION ON THURSDAY AND IT’S MADE GAUDREAU AND TKACHUK A DISTANT MEMORY.
THE BUZZ IN CALGARY WAS THAT THE HUBERDEAU TRADE MEANT NOTHING IF THE FLAMES COULDN’T GET HIM SIGNED LONG TERM BUT NOW TREE’S DONE IT.
THERE’S NEVER ACTUALLY TIME TO RELAX IN THE NHL, BUT HOPEFULLY BRAD AT LEAST TAKES A BREATH THIS WEEKEND.
