FRIDAY COMMENTARY – X MARKS THE SPOT

A coupla three or more thoughts heading into another frigid weekend on the Canadian prairie:

  • We won’t need to worry about curling this weekend. Saskatchewan’s Robyn Silvernagle failed to make the cut at the Scotties in Kamloops. The North Battleford product finished with a 2-6 record. But she did the province proud, and clearly is the best Sask has to offer in this era.
  • Still on the ice, we mentioned in the weekend column that Darryl Sutter is now coaching for his job the rest of the way with the Calgary Flames and to be honest, it’s been fascinating to watch. This week the Jolly Rancher went against the grain, starting back-up goalie Dan Vladar in back-to-back games – as in, two games in two nights. And it almost worked. Calgary lost 4-3 in OT at Vegas Thursday night but the club earned three out of four points to keep them in the playoff hunt. Trouble is they’ve played more games than anyone who’s currently on the playoff bubble, and they’re a point behind the Avalanche for the last playoff spot. Saturday’s game at Colorado isn’t for all the marbles, but it’ll go a long ways to deciding if this team gets in or not. Must-see TV.
  • Somebody told me we don’t talk about the Jets enough and that’s probably true. Taking a peek at them, they’ve only won four of their last 10 games and and have slipped behind three other teams in the West. CURSES! I saw a pundit asking Thursday “What’s wrong with the Jets?” The answer is nothing, other than they’re bored waiting for the playoffs.
  • And lastly, some football fans were geeked up about the XFL’s Thursday night football game where the St. Louis Battlehawks knocked off the Seattle Sea Dragons 20-18. I’m all for year-round football, but didn’t watch the game and wouldn’t have known where to find it if I’d tried! I was all in with the XFL the first two times, however this time around they’ve gotta give me a reason to watch and so far they have not.

That’s all I got! Have a great weekend and for goodness sake, stay warm.
