FRIDAY COMMENTARY – I’M IN
(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98, Rock 98.5 FM & LTD Radio)
We end the week with a coupla three thoughts …
Clearly it’s been very quiet in the CFL since free agency died down and the biggest story this week is the sale of the Montreal Alouettes which, I’m told, should be officially announced today.
Quebec media giant Quebecor has purchased the team and of course it comes with some controversy.
Quebecor CEO Pierre Karl Peladeau was once head of the Quebec Separatist Party and NHL people have told me Pierre was turned down by the NHL for ownership due to his political views.
Clearly the CFL didn’t have a problem with that, nor should they. If it was up to many Western Canadian tycoons, they’d vote in favour of separation too!
Anyway Quebecor owns, among other things, TV channel TVA and newspaper La Presse and if there’s one thing the CFL is missing the most, it’s media coverage.
Commissioner Randy Ambrosie wanted a local owner with deep pockets, and he got it. So bravo.
Although I’m reminded of former Alouettes owner Bob Wetenhall, who’s the greatest owner the CFL ever had. He ran the team from a boat here in Florida.
It can be done.
Secondly, it’s Week 4 in the XFL and they’ve got my attention. Every game is on a major U.S. network and to be frank, they’re up in my face everyday.
I guess I forgot about Alabama great A.J. McCarron playing in the league, and the Week 3 highlights of NFL bad boy Josh Gordon’s touchdown have been replayed endlessly.
The XFL’s getting lots of media coverage and been impossible to ignore.
I’m in.
And lastly, the NHL doesn’t need extra media coverage for me to be invested. All it takes are regular checks of my Score app for scores and standings. (The greatest App ever developed).
The worst possible thing happened for the Florida Panthers Thursday night as the two teams they’re chasing for a playoff spot – the Islanders and Penguins – went to overtime with New York winning. Three points were handed out.
Now let’s see what happens tonight.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

That’s why you only need a win column and loss column. The loser point is just dumb.
Respectfully it won’t work. They used to have the Win-Loss-Tie. Problem there is do you really want to pay to watch a game and then after a tie they go to Overtime and everyone is just easing back to not lose that point. The extra point was created as an incentive. The shoot out determines it and if a team loses to many of those extra point deals they can be on the outside looking in. I think this changed hockey to the speed game it is today. You need to score, score often, and defend as literally every game… Read more »
You’re right about separatism.
