WEDNESDAY RUNDOWN: THEO FLEURY JOINS!
It was an emotional and somewhat controversial Episode #964 of The RP Show – Daytime Sportstalk – when NHL great Theoren Fleury joined us live at Grey Eagle Resort & Casino in Calgary! Here’s the rundown:
- RP and Moose Dupont got things going with The Warmup covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) Japan wins the World Baseball Classic with a thrilling 3-2 win over USA in Miami, in an epic showdown between Angels teammates Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout to end it, 2) MLB announces the next WBC will also be held during spring training, 3) NHL leftovers including the Flames rebounding for a 5-1 win at Anaheim, 4) Rod’s NHL Top 5 are BOS – CAR – VGK – MIN – EDM while the Bottom 5 are MTL – CHI – ANA – SJ – CBJ, 5) NBA happenings, and 6) Randoms include WR Kian Schaeffer Baker to miss the start of the Riders season, XFL ratings reaching 1-million per game and Junior Hockey playoffs.
- NHL great Theoren Fleury (1,084 NHL games played, 1,088 points) joined the show for an hour long visit which covered every topic imaginable. Theo was engrossed in the WBC and said he might’ve been a better baseball player growing up than hockey player. He predicted the Stanley Cup winner will come from the Eastern Conference and that the Toronto Maple Leafs will lose out in the first round. As a survivor of child sex abuse and Addiction, Fleury said he’s grateful for his struggles because they’ve turned him into the man he is, helping others. He also broached the subject of his exclusion from the Hockey Hall of Fame, noting his resume which includes a Stanley Cup, Olympic gold medal and World Juniors championship.
- The daily Capital Auto Mall/Universal Collision Centre poll question was: The Stanley Cup winner will come from the _____ Conference. At press time, 60% of respondents said the East.
- Florida Panthers radio voice Doug Plagens joined the show to discuss the team’s disappointing 6-3 loss at Philadelphia Tuesday night, which snapped a three-game win streak. Plagens recapped the amazing first season in Florida of Matthew Tkachuk, and explained how and why the Panthers team gets along so well.

Dale Hunter isn’t in the Hall of Fame and aside from his NHL career he has 800 wins as a coach in the OHL. Theoren Fleury’s resume speaks for itself and Rod Brind’amour isn’t either. You know who is?….Haley Wickenhieser who is also helping run the Leafs into the ground. The Sedin Twins, Daniel Alfredson, and Dick Duff. It’s like Dale said, “I ain’t their kind”.
