TUESDAY COMMENTARY: GET THE DISCUSSION GOING
(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98, Rock 98.5 FM & LTD Radio)
It’s great to be back in the Motherland, giving a keynote address today on Mental Health as it relates to Agriculture at the Moose Jaw Events Centre.
It’s all part of a day-long seminar put on by Farm Credit Canada: Saskatchewan, and there are other speakers on hand to assist farmers & producers with daily life and challenges on the farm.
On today’s Commentary I’m going to pass along some bare bones tips which are part of my address.
First, we’re in a global Mental Health crisis but no one really knows what that means! Think of your Mental Health like you do your physical health. Is it strong or is it weak? Rate them both on a scale of 1-10, and you’ll soon realize you could probably benefit from some work in both areas.
Secondly, suicidal thoughts are not normal. They are a brain malfunction caused by a variety of things. The average person will never think about ending their own life at any point in their lifetime. If it’s crossed your mind, then it’s time to reach out for assistance immediately.
Another key point relates to stress. The top two stressors in life are 1) Money, and 2) Control. Examine how those two things affect your life, and what can be done about it.
In the Recovery program we joke the only thing we can control is the light switch! And even that’s not a guarantee.
In truth, the only thing you can control is your attitude and how you respond to things. Life is 90% what happens to you and 10% how you respond.
And this Commentary isn’t even brushing on the topic of substance use and Addiction which is a very large part of my address.
Let me bundle it all up and boil it down to one sentence:
The best weapon against Addiction is prevention.
Dangerous drugs have never been easier to get, and never been cheaper. At the same time, Mental Health issues have never been more prevalent, especially with teens.
It’s a deadly combination.
Let’s get the discussion going before it’s too late.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary
(The Rod Pedersen Show airs daily at 12 pm ET on Game+ TV, YouTube Live and WQEE Radio)
Concise and precise. Well done.
It starts and ends with the individual. In 2001 a former Pats Captain hired his hockey buddies and started a very entry level gym. They changed my life. I dropped 30 lbs, kept it off, and those guys with their encouragement and acccountibility made me a fitness fanatic. Where the people at a corportate mental health retreat will get tripped up is here. Similar to physical fitness nobody is going to make anybody get their fat a$$ off the couch. We can talk cancer, heart disease, body shaming, etc, etc, etc. No fat slob would chose to be that way.… Read more »
