THURSDAY COMMENTARY – Y’ER WELCOME
(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98, Rock 98.5 FM & LTD Radio)
Wednesday’s Commentary was so nice, we’re going to do it twice! Here goes another edition of The Good, The Great & The Ugly …
First the good: It would be tough to convince Regina Pats fans that it’s good the Saskatoon Blades have evened that first round series at 2-2 followed Wednesday’s 4-3 OT win under the orange top.
I don’t blame them and from their perspective, it’s not.
Yesterday I mentioned the whole league is talking about this series but … check that … the whole country is. The highlights are running on the sports networks and the game summaries are on the national sports wire.
It has to go seven games. And the Pats have to find a way for Connor Bedard not to have to do this alone.
Next the great: Of course the Calgary Flames went into Winnipeg and manhandled the Jets 3-1 in a true must-win game Wednesday night!
That was the game I watched from start to finish and there were two big stories in this one: 1) It was an absolute war, and 2) Jacob Markstrom won a goaltending battle against Connor Hellebuyck. Who saw that coming?
So now the Flames and Jets are tied for the final playoff spot and Calgary has the easier schedule in the remaining games of the regular season.
More than anything I want the Flames to make the playoffs just to prove everyone wrong because it’s been unbelievably negative in Cowtown.
But their fate is in their own hands and if they miss, they’ll have no one to blame but themselves.
And finally, the ugly: What do we think of Simon Fraser University discontinuing its football program? I’m not surprised.
To me it signals the start of things to come and frankly I’m shocked it took this long. The fact most Canadian university sports programs survived Covid was a surprise to me but if these schools ever start to run themselves like businesses, it’s going to be curtains for USport. Nevermind the fact SFU played in the NCAA.
If it becomes about what makes you money versus what costs you money, look out.
And that’s why we need to support university sports fundraisers when they happen.
Y’er welcome.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary
(The Rod Pedersen Show airs daily at 12 pm ET on Game+ TV, WQEE Radio and all major podcast platforms)
Great stuff, First – Saskatoon’s roster- 1 – 12, 1-6 are average to above average players all going in the same direction. I said for a team that deep then why are the Regina Pats able to hang and take the leads? It’s only a matter of time before the Pats drop the nuclear bomb and take this series. Other guys need to score, but if they can’t then just keep doing what Bateman, Stringer, Ginnel, the list goes on – these construction workers are putting the boots on, blocking shots, and doing all they can. But just start winning… Read more »
regarding the Blades vs Pats. Or the other way to look at it is if the Blades find a way, and there is a way, to control Bedard even somewhat, the Pats are hooped and dont stand a chance. Pats are a one man show, it is what it is. If the knucklehead Blades coach just sets up a plan to keep Bedard in check a bit better then the Pats are done like a dinner, stick a fork in them like the sunday turkey this weekend……ha ha ha
I think at the end of the day if you ever watch Joe Rogan. He had Dave Goggins on there. Dave took umbrage with an individual and then simply dropped all the charges. He sat back and pondered, “Now how many demons would that guy have.” For an individual to continually hammer away at a 17 year old boy that not since Jesus have people come from near/far to get a glimpse of, and who has brought nothing but joy to a community that was hurting from the past few years…..I ask that same question to you. – Who hurt… Read more »
