THURSDAY COMMENTARY – THE PURPOSE
(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98, Rock 98.5 FM & LTD Radio)
We like doing it so much, we’re going to do it again … The Good, The Great & The Ugly!
First, the good: If you’re a fan of Canadian NHL teams, Wednesday night was for you. The Leafs stayed alive with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at the Florida Panthers while the Oilers knocked off Vegas 4-1 to tie up that series 2-2.
Overall this is good, although I’d have liked to see the Panthers finish off Toronto. However I knew the Cats were in trouble when I heard the announcers say on the radio in the pregame, “We don’t need to win this game.”
Yikes. What an attitude! Once you starting talking like that …
But more hockey is always good.
Next, the great: CFL rookie camps are officially in full swing. I never, ever was able to figure out why but across the league, veteran QBs were on the field with all the rookies. In Saskatchewan and Winnipeg, that included Trevor Harris and Zach Collaros.
Harris never threw a pass, but he did get to know his teammates better and told the media afterwards that it was like “the first day of school”.
Those are largely fun, aren’t they? It’s been so long, I can barely remember.
But CFL football is back, and that’s great!
And lastly, the ugly: You knew it was going to happen. The headlines are rife with stories of sports people getting in trouble with gambling on their own leagues. First it was five NFL players, then the Alabama college baseball coach, and now an MLS player.
You have to know they’ve been warned repeatedly, and threatened with suspensions or firings.
But still they do it, and people can’t figure out why.
It’s called Addiction. It’s a Mental Illness which is loosely defined as, “The inability to stop a behaviour or use of a substance despite it causing problems in your life. That’s Addiction.”
Been there.
And these young people are battling something that’s way bigger than them, and didn’t even know it till they got in too deep. The only way out is with a guide.
And just like that, I discovered my purpose in life.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary
(The Rod Pedersen Show airs daily at 12 pm ET on Game+ TV, WQEE and Streaming)
The very bad and absolutely ugly … NHL Winnipeg Jets let Pail Maurice walk. The real problem; Kevin Cheveldayoff the person who should be gone never to return to the NHL. Thw Winnipeg Jets will never win a Stanley Cup in the foreseeable future as long as Cheveldayoff is the gm.
Everything is an addiction now. Issues of moral failing, bad character, poor judgement, inabilty to see a larger picture, wanting to take advantage of a situation to make money – or in general just being a scumbag that can’t cope or handle life is never discussed. We don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. It’s why treatment centers now use the model of “harm reduction” – again, can’t hurt their feelings. Regarding gambling: Pete Rose not once since 1989, and there were unsubstantiated reports going back to 1982, that he never asked for or got the benefit of the doubt being… Read more »
