FOOTBALL FRIDAY RUNDOWN
We covered all the hottest topics in sports and then got down to some good ol’ fashioned gridiron talk, covering all leagues, on Friday’s Episode #999 of The RP Show – Daytime Sportstalk – on Game+ TV, WQEE & Streaming! Here’s the rundown:
- RP and Moose Dupont kicked it off with The Warmup covering these Quick Six show topics: 1) 1-game suspensions for the Oilers’ Darnell Nurse and the Golden Knights’ Alex Pietroangelo, 2) Stars & Hurricanes win on Thursday night, and Friday’s Stanley Cup Playoff slate including Panthers at Leafs and Oilers at Golden Knights, 3) The Blue Jays kickoff a 10-game homestead Friday when they host the Atlanta Braves, 4) On Thursday the 2023 NFL schedule was released. Rod wondered – why all the hoopla?, 5) The Centennial Cup opened Thursday in Portage, MB, and 6) WHL Final and NLL Playoffs.
- Segment 2 of Hour 1 was dedicated entirely to the CFL and its Top Storylines of 2023.
- The daily Key Auto Group poll question was: Will you be watching the XFL Championship Game Saturday night between DC and Arlington? At press time, 61% of respondents said no.
- Markcast (XFL) Podcast host Reid Johnson joined the show from Seattle just before boarding a jet to San Antonio for the XFL title game. Reid previewed the clash and told viewers why they should watch! The inevitable CFL vs XFL debate came up and the panel agreed that if you love football, you’ll be watching the game. Johnson also discussed his beloved Kraken’s Game 5 home loss to Dallas.
- In Hour 2 were joined by TSN CFL Insider Farhan Lalji. He explained the CFL’s USA TV deal with CBS Sports Network and said 40 games will air in 61-million U.S. homes. As for the other games, they’re up for bid from other networks but Farhan assured fans that all games will be available via streaming in the States. The panel debated the CFL’s Top Storylines in 2023 and Farhan said his #1 story is how the Roughriders will fare with new Offensive Coordinator Kelly Jeffrey. He also touched on the Nathan Rourke-less B.C. Lions and is Chris Jones on the hot seat already in Edmonton? Regarding the SFU football program saga, Lalji reported that the SFU football program hopes to play some non-conference exhibition games in 2023 and then part part of Canada West in 2024.
