FRIDAY COMMENTARY – 68%

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98, Rock 98.5 FM & LTD Radio)

Some random thoughts to end the week cuz everybody loves the random thoughts …

#1 – I woke up this morning to see a Twitter timeline absolutely jammed with talk about last night’s Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Eastern Conference Final between the Panthers and Hurricanes in Carolina.

Or should I say … this morning’s game?

Panthers Face of the Franchise Matthew Tkachuk scored with 13 seconds lift in quadruple overtime for a 3-2 Florida victory and a shocking series lead. The winning goal came at 1:38 am ET.

That capped the sixth-longest game in NHL playoff history, and the fourth-longest of the modern era.

#2 – We’re not finished talking with this game yet. I’m not the biggest lover of analytics nor stats but there’s a glaring one nobody can ignore: Teams who win Game 1 of the NHL Conference Finals go on to win the series 68% of the time.

Reserve Your Seats Here!

The Panthers will like that stat. The Hurricanes will not.

#3 – Like many of you, I’m eagerly anticipating the kickoff to the CFL preseason. In case you hadn’t noticed, it comes on Monday with Edmonton at Calgary at 2 pm MT. It’s not on TV.

Fans are clamouring for more CFL coverage but we’ve already covered the storylines, the Power Rankings and the projections.

The day-to-day camp coverage has become mundane. The important stuff, like who will be the Riders’ back-up to quarterback Trevor Harris, will be decided in the preseason.

And that’s why I can’t wait for it.

And #4 – I was asked on Thursday if I’m enjoying this up-and-down Blue Jays season (25-19, 3rd in the AL East). The answer is of course, yes! You won’t get a lot more drama in the regular season than what the Jays and Yankees provided this week at Rogers Centre. All you can ask for is a reason to watch and the Jays are providing that.

And don’t look now, but they’re currently in a wildcard spot.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

#3 – Toronto Star has an article about the dwindling media coverage. Darrell Davis argues mainstream media is the only way the fans can connect to what’s happening. I have not read a single iota of Leader Post coverage concerning the Saskatchewan Roughriders or any CFL team. I refuse to read a single article from the Roughriders “Historian” on their webpage. My information comes from 3Down Nation, various other outlets like this one, and using my ears and eyeballs. When the 70 year old people are telling others how it needs to be done……that’s the demise. Toronto Argos are going… Read more »

I think the “historian” is doing a wonderful job. I like his articles tremendously. 3downnation also has some great articles. I read them all! Even the boring blue bomber ones. 😁😁

Jays going nowhere. The number of players left on base so far this year? Can’t count that high! Lack of timely hitting exacerbates the mediocre at best pitching (where have you gone Alek Manoah??) Translation? 500 record, miss the playoffs. Trading Hernandez and Gurriel for what?

The Blue Jays are nowhere near as good as the Toronto media says while trying to brainwash us, just like they do with the Leafs.
