WEDNESDAY COMMENTARY – HAIL THE LITTLE GENERAL

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98, Rock 98.5 FM & LTD Radio)

It’s about to go down.

The 2023 Canadian Football League season kicks off Thursday night at McMahon Stadium in Calgary as the Stampeders play host to the BC Lions in the league lid-lifter.

As always, the CFL is out with its weekly Game Notes and there are some very interesting facts in Week 1.

For instance, the Stampeders and Lions haven’t met in a season kickoff game for the entire league since 1967! And you thought things were getting stale.

You may be interested to know the Winnipeg Blue Bombers enter the season with the oldest roster at an average age of 28.9 years. Saskatchewan is next at 28.6. The youngest team in the league is Chris Jones’ Edmonton Elks at an average age of 27.6.

Here’s one: Hamilton quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell needs 10 wins to reach 100 career and if he does it this season, he’ll be the second-youngest player in CFL history to do it. Who’s the youngest?

Ron Lancaster. The Little General reached 100 wins at the age of 33 years and 10 days.

He must’ve been something to watch.

Meanwhile as the CFL gets set to kickoff the season, sack king Charleston Hughes is not on a roster. Perhaps he’s waiting for a call from a team in need this summer, or maybe he’ll never play again and a retirement announcement is imminent.

As it stands, Chucky’s at 136 career sacks and that’s 21 behind the all-time leader, Grover Covington.

And lastly, here’s a stat you may want to know if you plan to play the CFL’s weekly Pick ‘Em Challenge, or throw some money down at our official betting partner, Bet Regal:

Road teams had a winning percentage of .545 last season, which is the second-highest in CFL history.

So much for homefield advantage!

Enjoy the season folks, and may the best team win.

He’s on Mount Rushmore for CFL Coaching – Don Mathews – Wally Buono – Ron Lancaster and that last spot is interchangeable, but nobody is surpassing those. Ron Lancaster is also the poster child for any Roughrider since 1979 to understand this fanbase is Judas Isacariot 2.0. You never turn your back on them as the knife will go straight through the shoulder blades and if you face it head on then you’ll get it in the forehead. Recent people to learn this: Kent Austin, Henry Burris, Darian Durant, and Cody Fajardo. This is because most of them do not… Read more »
