FRIDAY COMMENTARY: BE HONEST – DO YOU CARE?

(Listen daily for the Rod Pedersen Commentary on Cat Country 98, Rock 98.5 FM & LTD Radio)

A coupla three thoughts headed into the weekend …

#1 – One of the more popular national TV sports network anchors mentioned this week that now that the NHL & NBA are over, it’s time to really focus on Major League Baseball and really delve into the plight of the Blue Jays.

I thought to myself … umm … what about the CFL?

Those networks are obviously free to cover and talk about whatever they wish but the last time I checked, the CFL does cover nine major centres almost from coast-to-coast in Canada.

Where the national media took the off-ramp away from the CFL, I have no idea, but we’re here for it front-and-centre on all our platforms and have thoroughly enjoyed the football so far. Great games in Week 2, including the Bombers at Riders tonight.

#2 – While watching the Stampeders & RedBlacks at the Shark Club Deerfoot Meadows here in Calgary last night, a Stamps fan leaned over and asked if I missed football play-by-play.

I had to say no, I do not. For the last five years I’ve enjoyed having summer weekends off, not standing on the sidelines at practice all day in inclement weather, and a myriad of other things.

I can enjoy and support the CFL just fine the way I currently am, and can also have a relationship with all teams rather than just one.

Hockey I might look at one day, or maybe football in the States, but for now I see no reason to change a thing. I’m happy.

#3 – People in the media business are still buzzing over all the cuts in our industry this week, including 1,300 at TSN/Bell Radio and the canning of the all-sports radio station in Edmonton. There were a ton of people let go at Global TV too which, for whatever reason, people aren’t talking about but those affected have reached out to me.

What a job I have as a Recovery coach, where I spend more than half my time! Always hearing from people at their lowest point.

But it’s rewarding to help others and I suppose a good thing to be known as the guy who found the happy road after facing a tidal wave of adversity in life.

But none of that changes the fact the Canadian media industry is in a crisis.

But I have to wonder; how many of you really care?

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

I care, because I know what it’s like to be let go or put on leave, but also don’t care because of what global and bell media have been pushing the past 3 years.

If MLB and NBA vanished tomorrow I wouldn’t blink an eye.

Being a diehard Rider fan in Edmonton, and a devout CFL fan, cannot believe Bell dumped TSN 1260. Far and away the best and only AM radio station I listened to. O wish all of them the best and miss them all!! Corporate greed, I don’t believe for one second TSN 1260 lost money.
Bell Let’s Talk can stick it! Hypocrisy. The only thing that talks to them is money.
