THURSDAY COMMENTARY

It used to be, probably, my favourite debate.

The Hall of Fame.

But like everything, times have changed and that includes Halls of Fame in just about every sport.

They’re calling this year’s Hockey Hall of Fame induction class, announced Wednesday, “The Year Of The Goalie”.

Clearly, that gets the thumbs-up from an old target like me and bravo to Tom Barrasso, Mike Vernon and Henrik Lundqvist whom are going into the Hall of Fame this fall in Toronto.

Some are saying Mike Vernon isn’t deserving enough but they’re easily dismissed. You just don’t know what you’re talking about.

Also in the class are Ken Hitchcock, Pierre Lacroix, Pierre Turgeon and Caroline Ouellette.

We’re not here to rain on anyone’s parade and Wednesday’s announcement should be the highlight of these peoples’ lives.

But Pierre Turgeon? Does he have relatives on the selection committee?

However it’s not about that. It’s the snubs that I just don’t get.

You all know my thoughts on Theoren Fleury so we won’t go into much detail there. A Stanley Cup, Olympic gold, World Junior gold and over a thousand points in over a thousand NHL games.

If you wanted the bio of a Hockey Hall of Famer, that’s it. Yet Theo’s not in because of what we hear is “a stigma”.

Don’t get me started.

I care less about the others but still sympathize with them. Jeremy Roenick, Alex Mogilny and Curtis Joseph keep having their names brought up this time of year, only to be dashed.

It used to be if you had a Hall of Fame career, you got into the Hall of Fame.

Not anymore.

And I’m not sure where that changed.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

I absolutely puked in my mouth this morning that’s how shameful this is. Other than Mike Vernon/Tom Barasso I hope these people take the mirrors down in their homes. There is definitely a stigma attached to Theo Fleury the same one that Tom Barasso had. Mike Vernon was beyond overdue. You know who else on that Calgary team should have been in long ago? I won’t even get into Fleury as by this point it’s an embarrassment to that museum. Not a mention or a sniff of Brad McCrimmon. I challenge anyone to name another guy that paired up and… Read more »
