MONDAY SPORTS PAGE: RATTLERS SNAP SKID

The Saskatchewan Rattlers (3-6) snapped a five-game losing streak with their second victory of season against the Scarborough Shooting Stars (5-5) in a 79-65 win at home on Sunday afternoon.  CEBL points per game leader Justin Wright-Foreman led all scorers with 30 points and 6 three pointers.
 
“Wow,” Saskatchewan head coach Dean Demopoulos said after the game. “Like most of the time I watch him play, [Wright-Foreman] has that ‘it’ stuff that everybody talks about but can’t explain.” 

Meanwhile the Calgary Surge snapped a two-game losing streak with a 93-88 win over the Vancouver Bandits at Langley Events Centre on Sunday.  After trailing by as much as 22 points and struggling to score in the first half, the Bandits fought back to tie the game in target score time.  However, clutch finishes from Stefan Smith and Sean Miller-Moore earned the win for the Surge. It’s Calgary’s first win over Vancouver in three meetings this season. 

A-J Ouellette scored three touchdowns as the defending Grey Cup champion Toronto Argonauts cranked up the heat in the second half to roll past the Elks 43-31 on Sunday in Edmonton. Ouellette only had two T-Ds for the Argos last season. The Argos improved to 2-and-oh, while the Elks are 0h-and-3. The home hex continues for the Elks, who have lost a CFL-record 19 consecutive home games, stretching back to October 12th, 2019.

George Springer moved into second place on baseball’s career list on Sunday with his 55th leadoff home run, Yusei Kikuchi pitched a season-high seven innings and the Toronto Blue Jays routed Oakland 12-1. The Athletics lost for the 10th time in 11 games. The A’s are now 40 games below 500 at 20-and-60. Cavan Biggio hit a three-run homer for the Blue Jays, who won two of three weekend games against the visiting A’s.

Alex Bregman drove in the game-winning run in the 11th inning and the Houston Astros beat Los Angeles 6-5 on Sunday despite squandering a three-run lead on a night the Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman collected his 2,000th career hit. Bregman’s leadoff single to left field scored Mauricio Dubon (do-BAHN) from second and Houston avoided a three-game sweep. The Astros won for just the second time in nine road games.

Keegan Bradley broke the tournament record en route to winning the Travelers Championship on Sunday. Bradley closed with a 2-under 68 for a three-shot victory. The 37-year-old Vermont native finished at 23-under 257 at TPC River Highlands, a shot better than Kenny Perry’s record set in 2009. Zac Blair closed with a 62 and finished tied for second with Brian Harman. Corey Conners of Listowel, Ontario finished tied for ninth, six strokes behind Bradley.

Ruoning Yin made a birdie putt from about 10 feet on the final hole and became the second woman from China to win a major, beating Yuka Saso by 1 shot in the Women’s PGA Championship on Sunday. The 20-year-old Yin closed with a 4-under 67, finished at 8-under 276. She joined Shanshan Feng as Chinese winners of women’s majors. Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ontario finished tied for 15th at 2-under.

Ross Chastain held off Martin Truex Junior and won the Ally 400 at Nashville Superspeedway on Sunday. It’s the third Cup Series victory for Chastain and his first since Talladega in April of last year. Chastain also gave Trackhouse Racing its first victory of the year at its home track. He led a race-high 100 laps, including the final 34. Denny Hamlin finished third, Chase Elliott was fourth and Kyle Larson was fifth.
