COMMENTARY – IDALIA
(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on Cat Country 98, Rock 98.5 FM & LTD Radio)
Wednesdays are always for random thoughts on this commentary, plus a few stories. Here we go …
#1 – In a continuation from yesterday … we still await Nathan Rourke either clearing waivers in the NFL, or being claimed by another team. He’s expressed his disappointment at not making the Jacksonville Jaguars 53-man roster but, you know, these decisions aren’t always about money or tenure.
People love the stories and in 2004 I recall Henry Burris coming back from the NFL to the Roughriders but coach Danny Barrett and GM Roy Shivers refused to name him QB1. They opted instead to go with Nealon Greene.
I believe to this day Shivers was still upset that Burris went to the NFL in the first place, leaving them holding the bag, and they weren’t going to hand him the starter’s role.
As it turned out, Nealon broke his leg in Week 1 at Toronto and Hank became the starter anyway, leading us all the way to overtime in the West Final.
Moral of the story: “Do what’s best for you, always”.
Both Shivers, and Burris, did that in this case.
Unfortunately some relationships in the aftermath just can never be repaired.
#2 – Back to Rourke. What he should do has been a topic of considerable debate. He could come back to the CFL (maybe he’ll have to), or stay on a practice roster for $12,000US per week. I know what I’d do.
But don’t ever assume what someone else is thinking.
Ever.
And #3 – Our boots are firmly back on the ground in South Florida with no plans to leave for awhile.
I appreciate all the well-wishers, especially when it comes to Hurricane Idalia this week. But for those who care, just take a peek at a map or The Weather Network. This Category 4 Hurricane is set to batter the Florida Gulf Coast, which is a good 3 ½ hour drive from here, just north of Miami.
There are natural disasters everywhere.
One thing about Saskatchewan: it’s usually pretty safe.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

If Nathan Rourke ever comes back to the CFL it will be the Edmonton Elks who will break the bank to sign him.
🤣🤣🤣
hold on a bit there Danny Boy. The Riders would not let him slip away and offer him the same $$ as Edmonton or anyone else plus have offer him the best stadium and place to play in the CFL.
