It’s Tuesday and that means it’s time for the Good, the Great & the Ugly!

First the good: It took me quite a few years in sports to realize that losses aren’t necessarily a bad thing. Especially in the regular season.

For instance take the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. They were rolling along as the greatest show on turf, 3-0 heading into Buffalo on Sunday, but got rolled 48-20 by the Bills and brought considerably back down to earth.

I was kind of hoping for a loss because the Dolphins hype on Miami sports radio was getting a little tough to take and now this week that gloating has turned to howling.

Remember this: Offense sells tickets but Defense wins championships.

If the Dolphins learn from what happened in Week 4, it’s a good thing.

Next the great: It’s really great that NHL fans are engaged with what’s gone on in the preseason but I truly hope they realize it doesn’t matter.

The Ottawa Senators are 5-1 in exhibition games and it has their fans planning the parade. The same goes for the 5-0 Devils and the 4-1 Flames.

The exuberance is great! But there’s a thing about getting your hopes up.

And lastly, the ugly: It’s, remarkably, the Calgary Stampeders. At 4-11, they’re tied for the worst record in the CFL. This, after a couple of decades as the CFL’s most stable franchise.

Somebody said to look at what’s changed in Calgary and you’ll find out the problem. However that’s a head-scratcher to me because not only did they change their GM (John Hufnagel out and Dave Dickenson in), but they also replaced their quarterback (Jake Maier for Bo Levi Mitchell).

That’s like removing two legs from a stool.

So finding the problem was easy. Finding the solution is where it gets difficult.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

The real ugly, Yesterday all the platitudes for the great George Reed came in. They were all on what a class act he was not only as a football player, but the legacy of a man carries on forever. This was done first by the Roughriders organization that had it not been for Jim Hopson, George would still be in Calgary. This is the organization that stood by and watched Ron Lancaster get booed off the field. Then the sports radio show that was fawning – to listen to that show, that particular Host, and this organization – I’ll say… Read more »
