COMMENTARY: COULD BE WORSE

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on Cat Country 98 & LTD Radio)

It’s Random Thought Wednesday. Let’s get started:

#1 – Connor Bedard is getting a crash course in life’s harsh realities. Chicago Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson set the record straight on Tuesday; waiving player Corey Perry had nothing to do with a distasteful rumour involving the Bedard family.

If you know them, it was very easy to dispel the garbage and defend their name. But some people can’t be convinced, even when they are presented with the truth, and that might be the most disturbing thing for me out of all of this.

But the lesson for Connor is that when you know the truth, nothing else matters, and you just have to block out all the rest. Easy to say, tough to do, but he’s learning this far more quickly than the rest of us did.

The truth doesn’t have to answer questions.

#2 – At some point, teams are going to look at the B.C. Lions and ask, “What exactly are they doing over there?”

Under new-ish owner Amar Doman, they’ve steadily climbed the standings, hosted playoff games, kept the same coach and GM(s) in place, and withstood the loss of star players. With all that has come booming attendance.

And now today, apparently, the Lions will be announcing the first-ever Touchdown Pacific where the Lions will host a regular season game in Victoria. From what I’ve read, this will replace Touchdown Atlantic for at least one year.

All positive things going on with the B.C. Lions, and bringing the franchise back from the dead.

It only starts at the top, always.

#3 – It’s just a fascinating thing to watch, this coaching business. We went deep on it on the RP Show on Tuesday with Matthew Barnaby. The NHL’s 18th all-time penalty minute leader feels when a team fires a coach, it’s just looking for a temporary jolt, but it really is just a stop-gap measure for bigger problems.

But not every team’s the same. And we’re very closely watching the Edmonton Oilers, and so too is the rest of the NHL.

With last night’s shootout win over Vegas, they’re 5-3 under new coach Kris Knoblauch of Imperial, SK.

Could be better, but it could also be a lot worse.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

We learn it easy or hard.

Usually not in a situation like Chicago. I have known my fair share of hockey moms after my divorce especially if your kid is the best player;)

But like we tell ex wives. This should be a country song: “If you stop lying about me/I will stop telling the truth about you”

At the end of the day he probably missed curfew. They mentioned it and he would have exploded as a 19 yr vet. Then it’s up to HR office: “Cory bullied I don’t feel safe”

…and yet another good man goes down.

Yes as in all sports it starts at the top Rod. That’s why the Riders are basement dwellers and will continue to be!

You are not off the mark. – basically now the cupboard from Chris Jones era has run out and we’ll be in 1997 where the highlight of the off season is they signed Mario Smith. Do you know how Jeremy O’Day got into the office? When you have a Union/Player Rep and he doesn’t know the CEO is buddying up to him – basically he had a choice. Be Scott Flory who was as militant as it gets OR you can buddy up to the office or the office buddy’s up to you in order to find out the dirt.… Read more »

Agreed Rod, Starts at the top. Owner of the Lions is a very successful self made business owner and runs the Lions like it. Where the majority of the Rider BOD and if everyone goes and reads their BIO’s they are career government bureaucrats, accountants, lawyers etc. This alone shows you why the decisions that have been made by this board to keep the career accountant in charge. Nothing will change for the Riders as long as the current board stays in place. O’day and Reynolds will keep getting contract extensions. That is a fact. The mess we are in… Read more »

Brother from another Mother I have being saying this for YEARS. When Jim Hopson was there he had the business side AND the football side. Nobody and I mean nobody was going to snow him. That Board and CEO – it’swhen a book club/sewing circle. All Betas. – and regarding running Goverment Departments or mickey mouse public sector troughs that is where the issue is. If you’ve been following the City of Regina and REAL – it’s only when they asked for $17M that people woke up and WTF? started asking questions to figure out what was actually happening –… Read more »

Pains me to say this. It seems like the only solution will be to have the stadium only 55% full for the whole year before something registers and drastic changes need to be made. After hearing Jon Ryan get interviewed maybe its time for him to put his name in to be on the BOD.

As long as people put the words Connor Beddard’s family and Corey Perry in the same article this nasty rumour won’t go away. Sad this is how people make a living off speculation that can have terrible consequences for third party families they don’t know anything about.
