COMMENTARY: THE GOOD, THE GREAT & THE UGLY

It’s Tuesday and time for another edition of the Good, the Great & the Ugly:

First the good: After a two-week break, the NFL is back to business and there were two significant announcements on Monday – Jason Kelce is retiring in Philadelphia after 13 seasons as a Hall of Fame center. Next stop, Canton.

And in Denver, the Broncos announced they’re moving on from franchise quarterback Russell Wilson. The move’s going to cost the Broncos 89-million dollars in dead cap space the next two years.

Hey – getting out of ridiculous QB contracts is not impossible. As long as you have enough money to buy out your problems.

Next the great: At the other end of the scale is the Yorkton Terriers and it was great to learn that the team isn’t going anywhere after a successful season ticket blitz for next year. The alarm bells were sounded not long ago that the team may not even finish this season but the people of Yorkton and area responded.

But let this be a lesson to the teams: These franchises don’t run themselves and the citizens are under no obligation to buy tickets.

Local players, fundraisers, creative marketing and good old fashioned hard work is what built this league and that’ll never change.

And finally the ugly: Looks like Jacob Markstrom’s time in Calgary has come to an end and it’s a shame.

Three times in an appearance on NHL Radio Monday, analyst Jeff Marek said the Flames are upset at Markstrom for expressing his displeasure at how his trade situation’s been handled by the Flames, and for overshadowing Mikka Kripusoff jersey retirement night.

Marek mentioned it so much that it became obvious somebody within the Flames put him up to it.

Here’s a suggestion – if you don’t like being called out by the players, stop jerking them around.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

Very grateful Yorkton Terriers are going to make it through. As for Jacob Markstrom ruining Mikka Kripusoff’s retirment ceremony big deal. GM Craig Conroy did his ex teamate a turn and retiring that guy’s jersey would be the equivalent if Toronto retired Felix Potvin’s #. At the end of the day 20 years ago those two along with a host of others simply didn’t get it done. It also shows the reason some teams win and some lose. – there was no reason to even mention NJ was interested if it wasn’t a done deal. It most likely was done… Read more »

Those so called ‘insiders’ that report rumours as news cause a lot of ill feelings.
