Jose Berrios threw six-and-two-thirds shutout innings and Davis Schneider drove in two runs as Toronto defeated the Seattle Mariners 5-2 in the Blue Jays’ home opener at Rogers Centre. Berrios allowed a walk and four hits and had six strikeouts as Toronto improved to 5-and-6 in front of a sellout crowd of 40-thousand-69. J-P Crawford and Cal Raleigh hit solo homers for Seattle, which falls to 4-and-7. The teams play again Tuesday in Toronto.

NHL

  • Conor Garland’s second goal of the game, scored at 18:31 of the second period, snapped a 3-3 tie and lifted the Vancouver Canucks to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the visiting Vegas Golden Knights on Monday. Brock Boeser, with his 40th of the season, and Quinn Hughes also scored for the Canucks. Jack Eichel had two goals and an assist for the Golden Knights. The Canucks padded their Pacific Division lead to five points ahead of the idle Edmonton Oilers.
  • Jake McCabe’s goal at 1:30 of overtime lifted the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-2 win over the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins. Auston Matthews scored his 65th goal of the season early in the third period to give the Leafs a 2-1 lead, but Drew O’Connor scored late to tie it and force O-T. Matthew Knies also scored for the Leafs, who won their second straight. Rickard Rakell also scored for the Pens, who had their four-game win streak halted. Pittsburgh and Detroit are tied for the final wild-card playoff berth with 84 points.

SJHL PLAYOFFS (Round 2)

WORLD WOMENS HOCKEY

Kristen Simms scored at 3:32 of overtime to give the United States a 1-0 victory over Canada at the women’s world hockey championship in Utica, New York. Both Group A teams went into the game with 3-and-0h records. Canada, with three wins and an overtime loss in preliminary play, will face Sweden, the Number 2 team in Group B, in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

MARCH MADNESS

  • UConn Huskies delivered the latest of their suffocating basketball beatdowns, smothering the Purdue Boilermakers on Monday for a 75-60 victory to become the first team since 2007 to capture back-to-back NCAA national championships. Tristen Newton scored 20 points for the Huskies, who won their 12th straight March Madness games. Zach Edey of Toronto led the Boilermakers with 37 points.

MASTERS

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Forget the azaleas and dogwoods at Augusta National. Players are marveling over firm and fast conditions for the Masters. How long it lasts depends on one day of rain expected later in the week. Xander Schauffele says shots into par 5s are bouncing across the turf. Tony Finau played a chip on the 11th hole he couldn’t keep on the green. Tiger Woods was out early with Will Zalatoris for nine holes. Among those who used Monday as a day of rest was Akshay Bhatia. And for good reason. He just got into the Masters by winning the Texas Open.

Why would you run a photo of a selfish jerk ruining a teamate’s interview? The guy is getting interviewed because he had an impact on the game, it’s his moment. But the camera loving spoiled brat has to steal the thunder! I’d love to see someone meet him and his bucket with a knuckle sandwich. I’d enjoy that picture!!!
