Commentary: Any Given Sunday

It’s Monday and that means it’s time for a weekend recap from the sports world!

#1 – For the life of me, I can’t figure out why people say they aren’t into the NHL preseason. If you truly missed hockey like so many said over summer, then here it is!

Above all, it was cool to see old faces make their debuts in new places, like Steven Stamkos with the Predators who faced off against the Panthers here in Florida. Seeing Max Pacioretty in a Leafs uniform was interesting too.

Above all, if you truly love the game, it was nice to just witness some live action again.

#2 – Of course the Roughriders won in Calgary on Friday night, 37-29. It’s so on brand with this zany CFL season; dare I say the most unpredictable in league history.

Actually I was a little surprised the Riders were favoured by three points going into it since they were winless in seven games, but I learned long ago not to question the oddsmakers.

And the Riders covered.

It gave them a huge sense of breathing room for a West Division playoff spot but they are farrrrr from out of the woods.

A few weeks ago somebody told me there’s no chance of an Eastern team crossover but looking at the standings, and how hot Hamilton is, it looks like there’s a very real possibility.

Trust me, you don’t want to rely on my math but that point the Riders complained about earning in Ottawa several weeks back may end up saving their bacon.

And #3 – It was the third Sunday of the NFL season and it provided its share of thrills and spills.

I’ll tell you what – here’s what I’m enjoying the most: The Minnesota Vikings are 3-0 and atop the NFC North which absolutely no pundit saw coming. That’s just one of several oddities that have come out of nowhere.

Hey, I’ve been wrong on my predictions too but I’m not being paid millions by a major network to get these things right.

But I suppose it would be a boring world if everybody knew what was coming on any given Sunday.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.

I found the fall out of the Calgary loss to be telling. The old guys are going ballistic over the young guys approach. Dave Dickenson appears to be just beside himself. Now entering pro sports is the entitled generation and participation medal group. Word to the wise. If you want to play in the CFL – they better figure out Special Teams is the route to get there and at a minimum it is a key component of this game. You can be a career player I.e Paul Waldo. As for the Riders big shock to nobody’s surprise Jaxon Ford… Read more »
