It’s Wednesday on the Commentary and that means it’s time for Random Thoughts. Here we go …

#1 – Literally you can throw all these thoughts up in the air and see what lands first.

My social media feeds are full of coverage of Maven Maurer, a Regina product, a two-time Grey Cup champion, and pro football’s first openly transgender player.

Maven – who you may know from a past life as Mike Maurer – came out to family, friends and us Facebook friends last year and then came out to the world when the 2000 Grey Cup champion BC Lions were honoured.

You know what? I have no problem with it. Maurer’s not hurting anybody and was tired of living with a big secret.

People call these things a mid-life crisis but in reality, I call them a mid-life correction.

To each their own, and it takes a lot courage to do this.

#2 – I wonder what life would be like without social media. Wait – we had it. As I recall, it was a lot more peaceful.

#3 –  Contrary to what Elon Musk says, mainstream media is not dead. Television is thriving if it’s done right, like what we’re doing at Game+TV and various other specialty channels.

But yes, printed newspapers are dead and the source for breaking news is now Twitter and Instagram. However there’s a place for opinion and commentary. That’s why you’re here!

Elon Musk should stick to electric cars.

As for the factions in the media who are going down the tubes – they did it to themselves.

And #4 – We’re in for a heckuva ride in the NHL the rest of the way! About two-thirds of the season are left and people are starting to talk about the Coach of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and stuff like that.

Will the Flames make it? Can the Jets keep it up? Will the Predators ever wake up? These are the top stories.

My advice to the fans is to follow the wisdom of coaches from decades gone by and that is: When it comes to your favourite team, don’t get too high, and don’t get too low.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.

(The Rod Pedersen Show airs daily at 12 pm & 4 pm ET on Game+TV, Podcast & YouTube Live)

I totally agree with #2, Rod. Miss the good old days where you could speak your mind and not be vilified.
