Commentary: The Good, The Great & The Ugly

It’s Tuesday and time for the Good, the Great & the Ugly!

First the good: Everybody’s talking about baseball. At least, the people around me. For good reason the Blue Jays bandwagon is close to capacity and tonite the Bluebirds open a home midweek series with the Cubs. It’s a battle of two playoff teams, as it stands. Another good measuring stick.

Meanwhile closer to home the Sylvan Lake Gulls have advanced to the WCBL League Final after a shocking upset sweep of Okotoks Monday night. Their opponent will be determined tonite as the Regina Red Sox visit the Saskatoon Berries in Game 3 of the Best-of-3.

Exciting!

Next the great: It’s easily the Game of the Week in the CFL. The 7-1 Roughriders are home to the 6-3 Hamilton Tiger-Cats Saturday night in a battle of division leaders. I haven’t even looked up what the other games are because they all pale in comparison.

A Grey Cup preview? Perhaps. It’s evoking memories for me this week of the 1972, 1989 and 2013 CFL title games between the Tabbies and Riders.

And finally the ugly: One thing I’ve learned over the past while is that if there’s one thing that unites us all, it’s the NFL. Hockey, the CFL, the Jays and a few other pockets of our scope have their share of fans but absolutely everyone is following the NFL.

That’s pretty cool, and how they’ve done it would make for an interesting study for another time.

That’s not the ugly part.

What is is the blossoming greasefire that is the Dallas Cowboys. They put aside their training camp squabbles to play Saturday in L.A. – a 31-21 loss to the Rams – and afterwards Cowboys QB Dak Prescott told Rams players, “We’ll see you in the NFC championship!”

How about just making the playoffs Dak? Or even staying healthy for a whole season? Neither of which happened last season.

Why do I get the feeling this is going to be a long year?
