It’s Random Thoughts Wednesday so let’s dive in!
#1 – We were tracking the World Baseball Classic from the exhibition games so we just had to tune in for the final Tuesday night in Miami. Venezuela snuck past the U.S. 3-2 at Loandepot Park to capture their first WBC title. You couldn’t have jammed another soul into the former Marlins Park with a shoehorn and it’s got people wondering if this’ll enliven baseball in this town.
We’ll see.
#2 – It was a captivating night in the NHL. Montreal beat Boston in OT on a Cole Caufield goal, and he’s the first Hab to score 40 goals in 30 years. Ole, Ole, Ole. Montreal could be primed to be Canada’s Team as we are now exactly one month out from the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
#3 – Columbus won again, thumping Carolina 5-1 and they are now 16-2-4 since Rick Bowness took over for the fired Dean Evason. It’s the highest winning percentage in the NHL in that period.
Meanwhile Rick’s old team, Winnipeg, lost in a shootout at home to Nashville. Can someone tell me what exactly happened to the Jets? If anybody knows, they ain’t saying.
#4 – March Madness officially tips off on Thursday and most brackets give you till noon ET that day to fill yours out. What the hey? I’m gonna fill one out. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.
And #5 – I personally favour the WHL’s version of March Madness and in case you haven’t noticed, the final weekend of the regular season is the one upcoming. The Regina Pats failed to clinch again last night, leaving the door open for the Moose Jaw Warriors.
Isn’t it great to play meaningful games in March?
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
