Two things are my focus today, so that’s what we’ll discuss on today’s commentary.

Firstly, I’m not sure my ticker can take these Stanley Cup Playoffs and I don’t even have a dog in the hunt. More than anything, these games have been wildly unpredictable and if you’re paying attention, the games are being decided by who makes the fewest mistakes and who’s able to capitalize best on the powerplay. As always.

Trouble is for those of us who make the picks, it’s impossible to know who those teams are going to be in advance!

And playoff experience has meant diddly squat, as evidenced by the young Philly Flyers taking a 3-0 stranglehold on aging Pittsburgh, and both Anaheim and Montreal going into Edmonton and Tampa Bay and winning.

It’s marvelous.

And then tonight is Round 1 of the NFL Draft and the coverage has been absolutely stupendous. I mean, it’s wall-to-wall on every TV and radio network and that’s in a year which the pundits call “thin” with little drama. It’s all anyone’s talking about, everywhere I go.

And we’ll all be watching tonight’s proceedings from Pittsburgh when Commissioner Roger Goodell will announce the Las Vegas Raiders have selected Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the #1 overall pick.

Trouble is, Fernando won’t be there. He’s staying back home here in Miami to be with his ailing mother and I haven’t seen anyone who has a problem with that.  At least, not that they’re saying publicly.

And then from Pick 2 on, it kinds of murky but nobody seems to care.

It’s all about the spectacle, and nobody does that better than the NFL.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
